Explaining Data Migration

What is Data Migration?

Data Migration means that (selected) data is being transferred from a source system to a new target system.

There are two different ways of data migration:

  1. New Implementation (Greenfield)
  2. Selective Data Transition to SAP S/4HANA

Within a Selective Data Transition to SAP S/4HANA approach, the target system is typically derived from the original source system, in contrast to a New Implementation, where the system can either be built from the original source system or created as a fresh installation of SAP S/4HANA.

From a data perspective, a New Implementation is generally limited to migrating master data, balances, and open items. A Selective Data Transition to SAP S/4HANA also allows the migration of closed and historical data.

With the SAP Business Transformation Center, you can perform a Lean Selective Data Transition to SAP S/4HANA.

You will learn in the following lessons and units how this can be done, and which prerequisites are necessary.
