Configuring Stock Determination

Objectives

After completing this lesson, you will be able to:

  • Configure stock determination in Inventory Management

Relevancy of This Configuration Task

This configuration task is relevant for the following Supply Chain solution processes:

  • Core Inventory Management (BMC)
  • Logistics with Third-Party Warehouse Management (1ZQ)
  • Stock Transfer without Delivery (BMH)
  • Stock Transfer with Delivery (BME)

Basically, stock determination is relevant in all cases where the Post Goods Movement (MIGO) application is used for goods issue postings.

In the following section, we will elaborate an example of a stock determination strategy in a role-based scenario and then show you how to configure this example .

Stock Determination

The following video provides an introduction to stock determination and shows an example of a discussion during a fit-to-standard workshop to determine the customer's requirements for stock determination.

Example of a Stock Determination Strategy

Imagine that after a productive conversation in which you ask your customer the right questions to determine their needs, the following stock determination requirements are defined:

Note
Please read carefully. The configuration demos below are based on these requirements.

****

  • The investigation focuses on plant 1010.

    • When withdrawing materials for a production order, the following should apply:

      • Raw materials should first be withdrawn from the raw material storage location (storage location 101C).

If the required quantity is not completely available in the raw material storage location, the system should take the missing quantity from a spare parts storage location (storage location 101B).

      • Auxiliary materials and operating supplies should be withdrawn first from the vendor consignment stock, if available, and then from storage location 101B.

    • For withdrawals to cost centers, the following applies to all materials:

The system first tries to withdraw the quantity from storage location 101A. If the available quantity is not sufficient, it then withdraws the remaining quantity from storage location 101B.

  • In all cases, and to save time, the system should automatically determine the appropriate stock. There should be no dialogue and no choice for the user.

Configuration of Stock Determination

We will configure the exact scenario described above, but first some theory.

Based on our example above, you can see that you can configure different stock determination strategies according to the following parameters:

  • The plant
  • The material
  • The movement type

Now, we move to your configuration environment and search for "stock determination" in Inventory Management. Let's start.

Create Stock Determination Groups and Rules

The first step is to group materials and movement types that are treated the same during stock determination.

We start with creating stock determination groups (for grouping materials) and stock determination rules (for grouping movement types).

Run the following demo to learn how to create stock determination groups and rules.

Assign Stock Determination Rules to Movement Types

Stock determination rules are assigned to movement types.

Run the following demo to learn how to assign a stock determination rule to a movement type.

Assign Stock Determination Groups to Materials

Stock determination groups are maintained in the product master data at plant level:

The following figure shows the raw material RM014 (resistor). At plant level, you can see the assigned stock determination group Z001.

The following figure shows the operating supply number HB01. At plant level, you can see the assigned stock determination group Z002.

Configure Stock Determination Strategy

Now, run the following demo to learn how to configure the stock determination strategy discussed and agreed with your customer.

Test your Configuration

You can now run the following demo to test the stock determination strategy that you have just configured.
