How to Assess Dangerous and Non-Dangerous Goods

Introduction: Dangerous Goods

When a product is intended to be transported compliance purposes have to be assigned to the product. These compliance purposes specify the dangerous goods regulations that are relevant for the transport of the product.

If the product is a dangerous good, is has to be classified according to the applicable dangerous goods regulations.

It has to be also determined whether the transport of this product is allowed in a certain country/region by the certain mode of transport.

Scenario I: Task 1: Create Product Master for dangerous goods

In this first task, Jasmine, our Masterdata Specialist creates three compliance relevant products. They will be used as dangerous goods.

Scenario I: Task 2: Manage Basic Compliance data for a dangerous good

Scenario I: Task 3: Classify unpackaged products for a dangerous good

The Product Stewardship Specialist Otto classifies an unpackaged product according to the assigned regulations and allows the transport for all the regulations.

Scenario I: Task 4: Classify Packaged Products for a dangerous good

Scenario II: Task 1: Create product master data for non dangerous goods

In this first task, Jasmine, our Masterdata Specialist creates three material master. They will be used as non dangerous goods.

Scenario II: Task 2: Manage Basic Compliance data for non dangerous goods

In this task Product Stewardship Specialist Otto wants to assign materials and related packaged products to an unpackaged product.

Scenario II: Task 3: Classify unpackaged products as non dangerous goods

Otto wants to classify the products as NON dangerous goods.

Scenario II: Task 4: Classify packaged products

Dangerous Goods Specialist Kylie wants to classify now the packaged products. At the end all regulations are released.

Now you should have an impression of "how to assess (non-) dangerous goods for a product".

Dangerous Goods Management Process

Dangerous goods for a Product

When a product is intended to be transported, the product steward specialist assigns compliance purposes to the product. These compliance purposes specify the dangerous goods regulations that are relevant for the transport of the product.

The dangerous goods specialist is responsible to assess the product.

If the product is a dangerous good, he classifies it according to the applicable dangerous goods regulations and determine whether the transport of this product is allowed in a certain country/region by the certain mode of transport.

During the classification process, the system generates the dangerous goods description with rules that are specified in each dangerous goods regulation. This describe can be printed on documents, such as sales order confirmations and delivery notes.

Watch the following video to understand how a possible process could look like. You learn which users and which roles are necessary to work with dangerous goods infiormation for a product.

  • Master Data Specialist: Sets the compliance indicator inside a product
  • Product Steward Specialist: Assigns materials and packaged products to an unpackaged product
  • Dangerous Goods Specialist: Classifies (un-) packaged products
  • Dangerous Goods Specialist: Allows / forbids transportation
