Creating a Business Object - Extending SAP Cloud for Customer

Okay! Welcome to the second part, where we plan to create your first solution and your first Business Object. So, to recap very quickly. What we are planning to do it is to create a data model now and this is what we start by creating a Business Object. Because a Business Object relates to our data model. So, let's go now to the SAP Cloud Application Studio. Okay, then let's log on to the SAP Cloud Application Studio. I installed it and have it here on my desktop. With a double-click, I can just launch it. That's my development environment. And here, first I need to select my system. Before you can select your system like me here, you need to configure it here. So it is simple. Just put a name here and then link to your system. Save and click OK. Then you can enter here your user. You need a user that is a part of development work center, and you can log on to your repository. After that we are connected to our solutions here and we can see all the solutions on the system. And this one, I have quite some test solutions here available. This we can close. This is your development environment and here I will just create a new solution. Here we will create a customer specific solution and I will just put the description here. In my case, I call it Seminar Management and I can also give a detailed description. In my case, I just copy it here. I put Customer Relationship Management as a Deployment Unit and I will leave the company information like it is this set mode, and then I click OK. And then the system is creating a new solution here. So, the solution is directly opened up here at the right-hand side. So you see in the Solution Explorer all the items present in the solution. There are not too many right now because our solution is completely new and empty. After your solution is created, I usually structure my solution with folders. So, I will add a new folder here and call it CustomObjects because there will be placed all custom objects, because later solutions might grow and we have many, much more objects. In my case, I create another folder where I call it Seminar Management. And here in this folder, there we will place all my objects that relate to the Seminar Management that we are creating. By clicking again, “add new item”, you get to the screen where you can find all the items we can create. This is really everything you can do with the Cloud Applications Studio and hopefully at the end of this video series, we have talked about all of it. So, I will create a new Business Object here. This I will call now Seminar Management.  Okay, then I have a new Business Object defined where all my seminars may be stored in the end. Here, we have some content code to give us some advice. We don't need that. And now we can start coding. I mean, what we see here now is not a programming language. I mean, here we see really a data definition language. So, we will define a Business Object with all its elements. I will hit ctrl + space and then we will get all the keywords, I can have here. In our case, we want to define a new element, so new field for the database. This element needs a name, so I will give it a name. We call it Name, because when we take a look back into the PowerPoint, here we can see that we have a name, a description and certain attributes here. These attributes we want to define now in our Business Object so that we can store this information in our seminars’ Business Object. Okay, after typing Name, which is really the name of it, I can make a colon and get again a help here. Now, I can get different data types. You see, we have many data types here because we have very specific data types.  It's called as a global data types by SAP. And we will just give here, for example, a LONG_Text as a data type here. And this we need to do for all of them. So we need to define another element here. This is the description. And here we will also put a LONG_Text which is long enough here. Okay, so now we have two fields. We actually need much more. But before I continue what I would like to do, I would also provide label because then we can translate, because that's a techniqual ID name. And here we can also give labels where you can then say name and you could also have for example spaces. We will see this later. And it looks very nice in this UI, and this label can also be translated in different languages very simply. So that's why it's best practice to really use always labels here. Okay, I will copy this label now here and call it Description. And now we'll do the rest. But this we will fast-forward a little bit in the video so that you don't need to watch me typing here.  Okay, here we go. Now we have defined nicely our business objects with all the fields that we need in order to store seminars here. I will now need to activate that. This will really create this database table in the system. I don't need to take care. I never worked with databases. I just click "activate" and this code will generate a database and I can work with it then.  And you also see here. I did a mistake here. So again, that's a life. I will just add, you know, the semicolon. Then I should not have any errors here. And then I can also activate. So, then let's activate. This error is just still from the activation. Let's activate now and we will see. It should work. Okay, now we see all items activated. We see this red bubble has gone here and we have activated now our Seminar Management BO here. You have this field. Now we have a database and that's already the basis that we need. That is our first step. So, we have created a new Business Object now, and we have created new solution now here. We have definied the Business Object with the attributes. And an attribute is defined by a label as a Name, an element that is just a keyword, the name of the field, and then the data type. We see here special data types like amounts, where for example, an Amount is a value of a currency and decimal value, whereas a date has already a certain date format here and the BusinessPartnerInternalID. That's a certain ID where I know every business partner has. And a teacher who's going to be one of our employees is a business partner. That's how we do the very basic definition of a Business Object. There's much more to it, but in the first videos we just want to go quickly through the basics. And with that, we're done here. And the next step is now to create some logic. But that we'll see in the next video.
