Understanding Source Control with Git in the SAP Business Application Studio

Hey everyone, it's Markus from SAP Learning, and today we will dive into the source control feature in the SAP Business Application Studio. We will be using a simple CAP application in Node.js to show you how easy it is to manage your code with Git. For those who are new to Git, it's a version control system that allows you to keep track of your code and collaborate with others. The SAP Business Application Studio has both visual and command line tools, and today we will be focusing on the visual tools. First, we need to initialize our project to enable source control. This will create a local repository where you can make changes and store a history of those changes. To share your code with others, you will also need to set up a remote repository, like on GitHub. Now that our project is set up, let's add our files to the repository and make a new version by committing our changes. We do this by moving the changes to the staging area and adding a meaningful commit message. One of the most powerful features of Git is the concept of creating branches, which allows you to create a copy of a specific version of your code. Before adding a new feature, you can create a new branch based on your main branch. You can manage your branches from the status bar at the bottom of the screen. After adding a new feature, you can commit the changes to the branch. And once you're ready to bring the changes into the main branch, you can use the visual tooling to merge the branches. For those who prefer the command line, Git is pre-installed in the SAP Business Application Studio, so you can start right away. And finally, to share your code with others, you can connect your local repository to a Git provider of your choice. That's a quick overview of the source control feature in the SAP Business Application Studio.
