Defining the basic concepts of Artificial Intelligence

Objective

After completing this lesson, you will be able to define artificial intelligence and summarize the technologies that power it

What is Artificial Intelligence?

We typically think of intelligence as a human ability to:

  • Learn from experience
  • Recognize patterns
  • Understand language
  • Solve problems
  • Make decisions
  • Adapt to new situations

When a machine performs tasks that appear to require some of those abilities, we call it artificial intelligence, or AI.

The word artificial is important. AI is not human intelligence inside a computer. It's software designed to perform specific tasks that we associate with intelligence.

What powers AI?

AI is powered by:

  • Data, which provides examples for the system to learn from, giving AI the raw material it needs to identify patterns and make informed predictions.
  • Algorithms, which define how the system processes information, translating raw data into structured insights, decisions, and actionable outcomes.
  • Computing power, which allows the system to analyze large volumes of data quickly, enabling AI to operate at the speed and scale modern businesses demand.
