The SAP Business Technology Platform (BTP) is the core foundation for SAP Business Suite. It offers essential tools for development, integration, AI, and data management. These tools support and expand SAP applications, such as SAP Sales Cloud and SAP Service Cloud Version 2. You can begin with a free Trial Account for exploration and learning or opt for an Enterprise Account to access full production features and capabilities.
Trial Accounts
A trial account lets you test SAP BTP at no cost for 90 days. The services provided during the trial are limited in terms of platform resources and functionalities. Access is available to everyone. Trial accounts are intended for personal exploration, non-productive testing, and evaluating the services.
For more details on how to self-register for a trial account, refer to Get an Account on SAP BTP Trial.
Enterprise Accounts
Enterprise accounts are linked to SAP customer or partner contracts and include the purchased entitlements for platform resources and services. They are best suited for business and production environments. The enterprise account offers both free and paid plans, such as:
- Subscription-based: Provides fixed monthly resources, ideal for predictable workloads.
- Consumption-based: Charges only for the resources used, making it suitable for scaling and experimentation.
- Free Tier: Lets you try productive services at no cost, with resource limits.

Global Accounts and Subaccounts
When you start working with SAP Business Technology Platform (BTP), it’s important to understand two main building blocks: Global Accounts and Subaccounts.
A global account is your organization’s main agreement with SAP - it acts as the top-level container for your SAP BTP resources. Think of it as your organization’s administrative umbrella. Here, you manage:
- Subaccounts: Your separate workspaces.
- Members: The individuals who have access to the global account.
- Entitlements and quotas: These specify how much of each service the organization can use.
- System Landscape: This refers to connected systems with their APIs and events.
You receive your SAP BTP resources at the global account level and then allocate them to different subaccounts as needed. Global accounts are not tied to any specific region or environment; they serve as the overall control center.
A subaccount is where the action happens. This subaccount is your dedicated workspace for:
- Deploying applications
- Using SAP BTP services
- Managing your subscriptions and members
Each subaccount is associated with a specific region, which is a physical data center location, and determines where your applications and data are stored. You can create multiple subaccounts for different regions, projects, or business units. Importantly, subaccounts are separate from each other, so actions in one do not affect the others. Note that the global account determines which resources (entitlements and quotas) each subaccount can use.
To put it concisely:
- The Global Account is your organization’s master control room in SAP BTP.
- Subaccounts are your project or region-specific workspaces where you build and run your solutions.

Note
Summary
- SAP BTP offers different account types: free trial accounts for exploration and learning, and enterprise accounts for business and production use. Enterprise accounts include both subscription-based and consumption-based models.
- Trial accounts are ideal for initial evaluation, testing, and exploration of SAP BTP services, while enterprise accounts provide full production capabilities and advanced features.
- Enterprise accounts offer flexibility through fixed monthly resources (subscription) or pay-as-you-go options (consumption). They also include a free tier for testing productive services within resource limits.
- The global account is the primary container that represents your organization’s main agreement with SAP, where you manage subaccounts, members, entitlements, and your system landscape.
- Subaccounts are dedicated workspaces within a global account. They are linked to specific regions and used for deploying applications, managing services, and subscriptions. They are isolated from each other based on project, region, or business unit.
