Writing Effective Prompts

Objective

After completing this lesson, you will be able to explain effective prompting techniques for Joule, including clear requests, relevant context, and follow-up refinement.

Writing Effective Prompts

What Makes a Good Prompt

When working with Joule, the way you phrase your request directly influences the result you get.

Although Joule understands natural language, clearer prompts lead to more accurate, relevant, and useful responses. You don’t need to learn a special syntax, but you do need to be intentional about what you ask.

A good prompt is:

  • clear in its goal

  • specific enough to guide the response

  • structured in a way Joule can interpret easily

Start with Your Goal

The most effective prompts begin with a clear objective.

Instead of thinking about how to phrase the perfect sentence, start by asking yourself:

What do I want to achieve?

For example:

  • Less effective:

    "Sales?"

  • More effective:

"Show me sales performance for this quarter."

Being clear about your goal helps Joule understand what kind of response is expected.

Add Context When Needed

Joule can provide better results when you include relevant context.

This might include:

  • time period (this quarter, last month)

  • region or business unit

  • specific object (customer, supplier, report)

For example:

  • "Show me sales performance."

  • vs

  • "Show me sales performance for EMEA in Q2."

The second prompt gives Joule more direction and leads to a more precise answer.

Be Specific About the Action

Different prompts trigger different types of actions (as you saw in Lesson 2).

Being explicit helps Joule respond correctly.

For example:

  • "Open the supplier report." (navigational)

  • "Summarize the supplier report." (informational)

  • "Create a supplier record." (transactional)

Even small wording changes can lead to very different outcomes.

Refine Through Conversation

You don’t need to get everything right in one prompt.

Joule is designed to support follow-up questions, allowing you to refine your request step by step.

For example:

  1. "Show me sales performance for this quarter."

  2. "Break that down by region."

  3. "What caused the drop in EMEA?"

This conversational approach allows you to gradually reach the result you need, without starting over.

Use Prompts as a Starting Point

In many cases, Joule suggests prompts or example questions based on your context.

These can help you:

  • understand what Joule can do

  • explore available capabilities

  • get started more quickly

Over time, you will rely less on suggestions and naturally develop your own way of interacting.

Lesson Summary

Writing effective prompts is key to getting the most value from Joule. By clearly stating your goal, adding relevant context, and refining your requests through conversation, you can improve the accuracy and usefulness of responses. Over time, small adjustments in how you phrase prompts lead to more efficient interactions and better outcomes in your daily work.
