Linking the Digital Twin to the Real World - Machine Data Integration

Objective

After completing this lesson, you will be able to configure and establish connections between SAP Digital Manufacturing and physical machines.

Prerequisites

For this chapter, please make sure that the following prerequisites are fulfilled:

  • The SAP Cloud Connector is set up

  • The production connector for SAP Digital Manufacturing is set up

  • The production connector for SAP Digital Manufacturing is connected to SAP Cloud Connector to SAP Digital Manufacturing

  • You configured authorized users and authorized user groups in the production connector

  • You configured production connectivity (cloud connector and production connector) in SAP Digital Manufacturing

For more information, see the following SAP training course:

    • DM3010 - Configuring Machine Integration in SAP Digital Manufacturing
  • You created an asset in SAP Digital Manufacturing

For more information, see the following lesson of this course: Introducing the Production Connectivity Model.

Shop Floor System Configuration

To connect the production connector and the physical machine layer, the connection between the systems must be set up. Therefore, a shop floor system must be created in SAP Digital Manufacturing to model a shop floor-based server to read and write tags, call services, and observe tags to notify relevant services on specific trigger conditions.

A shop floor system can be of different types (OPC UA Server, IP21 Server, OPC DA Server, OPC HDA Server, Asset Framework Server or Proficy Historian Server). In the shop floor system in SAP Digital Manufacturing, the cloud connector and production connector to use within the endpoint URL of the local server is configured and builds the link between the cloud and the local server.

This image illustrates how a shop floor system is modeled in SAP Digital Manufacturing.

You can configure a shop floor system in SAP Digital Manufacturing in the Configure Production Connectivity app, on the Shop Floor System tab. Here, you need to create or select your (pre-)configured server and define the production connector and OPC server endpoint URL, security settings, certificate type and authentication method.

Asset Connectivity Configuration

The Manage Asset Connectivity app can be used to link your SAP Digital Manufacturing assets to the shop floor system.

One asset can be mapped to many shop floor systems, so you have a 1:n relation between asset and shop floor system. In the Manage Asset Connectivity app, you select a pre-configured asset and add your pre-configured shop floor systems.

On the Structures tab of the Manage Asset Connectivity app, you can browse indicators in your asset structure for data tag endpoints in your server. You can then link the server data tags to the indicators in your asset structure.
