Discovering Joule

Objective

After completing this lesson, you will be able to identify the purpose and structure of Joule as an AI solution for the enterprise

Discovering Joule

Most organizations have invested in AI. Very few have moved beyond the pilot stage. Research from McKinsey shows that 74% of organizations are stuck in pilot mode with no clear path to scale. The gap is not ambition. It is architecture.

Generic AI tools answer questions. They summarize. They suggest. But they do not understand your business. They do not know your processes, your data relationships, or the rules that govern how your enterprise operates. When they act, they act without context.

Joule is built on a different premise. It is SAP's flagship AI solution, deeply embedded across SAP applications and connected to the data, processes, and business logic that enterprises run on. Joule does not sit alongside your business systems. It operates within them.

This lesson introduces what Joule is, how it is structured, and where it is heading.

What is Joule?

Joule transforms how people work by turning intent into action across every business function. It goes beyond answering questions. It executes work, coordinates agents, and acts within the processes and data that your business runs on.

Joule is not just a copilot, it is SAP’s AI solution. A copilot assists an individual with a task. Joule does something fundamentally different. It transforms transactional tasks into intelligent, connected workflows. You express your goals or intent, and Joule brings together the right data, insights, workflows, and agents to help achieve those outcomes, across SAP applications and relevant third-party systems. It surfaces insights from harmonized enterprise data and acts within the guardrails of SAP's security and compliance architecture.

At the center of this is Joule Work, SAP's dynamic workspace where you describe what you need to achieve and Joule assembles the data, agents, and workflows to get it done. Alongside Joule Work, Joule Desktop is a separate standalone solution in the Joule stack, designed for the desktop environment with its own expanded set of agentic capabilities. Both are part of how SAP is bringing Joule to wherever your work happens.

Behind Joule Work, Joule Assistants act as expert teammates. They interpret your intent and coordinate multiple Joule Agents working behind the scenes. Those agents are autonomous systems that plan, act, and execute complex multi-step tasks, automating business-critical processes across and beyond SAP applications.

Joule can also be extended. Through Joule Studio, you can build your own agents and solutions tailored to your business. Joule interoperates with external agents, applications, and data sources, while SAP's platform remains the trusted execution layer for business-critical processes throughout.

What makes all of this reliable is that SAP already has what most AI deployments are missing. Three foundations underpin everything Joule does:

  1. Deep process and industry knowledge. SAP applications encode decades of business process logic across industries. Joule agents built on this foundation understand the sequence, rules, and implications of business processes, not just the data those processes produce. An agent handling a procurement exception understands supplier lead times, approval hierarchies, and the downstream consequences of delay.
  2. Semantically rich business data. SAP's data model carries business meaning, not just values. When an agent reads an inventory record, it understands what the stock is for, where it sits in the supply chain, and what obligations it carries. This contextual understanding is what makes agent decisions reliable rather than technically correct but operationally wrong.
  3. Enterprise-grade governance. Actions taken by agents are governed, auditable, and reversible. The system operates within compliance frameworks, provides a complete audit trail, and maintains clearly defined escalation paths. Your data is never used to train third-party models. You do not give up control when you deploy SAP agents. You extend it.

These three foundations are what allow Joule to take autonomous action without creating unacceptable operational, financial, or compliance risk.

How Joule Is Structured

Joule is part of the Autonomous Enterprise, SAP’s vision for the future of business in the age of AI. It sits within a layered structure that organizes SAP's AI capabilities from the engagement layer down to the technical foundation. Understanding this structure helps you orient everything you will learn in this course.

Autonomous Enterprise layers

Layer 1: Joule: Joule is the engagement layer. You express intent in natural language. Joule interprets that intent, brings together the right data, coordinates agents, and returns results or executes actions, across SAP applications and select third-party systems.

Today, Joule is accessible through embedded experiences inside SAP applications, including SAP S/4HANA, SAP SuccessFactors, SAP Ariba, and SAP Business Technology Platform. Joule Work is the intent-based workspace where you direct agents and execute cross-enterprise workflows through adaptive spaces.

Layer 2: SAP Autonomous Suite: The SAP Autonomous Suite is the operational core of the business. It is where SAP applications automate functions across five autonomous domains: Autonomous Finance, Autonomous Spend, Autonomous Supply Chain Management, Autonomous Human Capital Management (Autonomous HCM), and Autonomous Customer Experience (Autonomous CX).

Each domain operates as a coordinated system of Joule Assistants and Joule Agents. More than 50 Joule Assistants and 200 specialized Joule Agents are being made available across these domains. Assistants coordinate agents to execute work. Agents execute specific multi-step tasks with precision.

Layer 3: Industry AI: Industry AI embeds domain-specific AI capabilities tuned to the requirements of individual industries. These capabilities are built directly into SAP applications and reflect the specific process logic, regulatory constraints, and operational patterns of sectors such as chemicals, consumer products, manufacturing, and logistics.

Layer 4: SAP Business AI Platform: The SAP Business AI Platform is the technical foundation. It combines SAP Business Technology Platform, SAP Business Data Cloud, and AI foundation services. It provides the process context, unified business data, purpose-built AI models, and enterprise governance that all other layers depend on. This infrastructure makes agents reliable, scalable, connected to enterprise data, and governable at the scale of global operations.

Layer 5: Accelerate Adoption: The fifth element describes how organizations move to the Autonomous Enterprise in practice. The delivery vehicle is the RISE with SAP Methodology , which is a structured framework combining a standardized project approach, expert guidance, and an agent-led toolchain. Joule is the central engagement and orchestration layer of this toolchain.

Seven Migration and Modernization Assistants operate under Joule’s orchestration across the full transformation lifecycle — from Discover and Prepare through Explore, Realize, Deploy, and Run. Together they are expected to reduce migration effort by a minimum of 35% compared to traditional approaches. Joule’s role does not end at go-live. The same assistants continue to operate in the running system, making the path to the Autonomous Enterprise a continuously improving operating model rather than a one-time project.

Understanding the Autonomous Enterprise

This is the vision for AI-driven business that drives your Autonomous Enterprise: people set the direction, and AI agents execute the work.

An Autonomous Enterprise runs on AI assistants and agents that manage and execute end-to-end business processes, working within governed boundaries, with humans in the lead. AI does the repeatable work. People focus on the strategic tasks and decisions that truly move the business.

Work is executed across one connected, adaptive, real-time system. Signals in one area trigger immediate, coordinated responses across domains. Demand changes no longer wait for planning cycles. They automatically drive production adjustments, inventory reallocation, and procurement actions. Agents continuously sense demand shifts, supplier risks, and capacity constraints, simulate scenarios, and optimize processes as operations run.

Governance is integrated to manage the full AI lifecycle securely and reliably.

Joule is the engagement layer for this model. It is how you direct the Autonomous Enterprise, monitor what agents are doing, and step in when judgment is required. Without Joule, the Autonomous Enterprise has no front door.

Some capabilities are in early access or rolling out through 2026. This course clearly signals what is available now and what is on the roadmap.

Lesson Summary

Joule is the engagement layer for the Autonomous Enterprise. It is not a copilot. You express intent, and Joule brings together data, workflows, and agents to achieve outcomes across SAP applications and third-party systems.

At the center is Joule Work, an intent-based workspace where you focus on outcomes while AI handles execution. Joule Assistants coordinate Joule Agents behind the scenes. Joule Studio enables you to extend Joule with your own agents and solutions.

Three foundations make Joule trustworthy at scale: deep process and industry knowledge, semantically rich business data, and enterprise-grade governance.

Joule sits within a layered structure: Joule (engagement), SAP Autonomous Suite (execution across domains), Industry AI (vertical intelligence), SAP Business AI Platform (the foundation), and Accelerate Adoption (move to Autonomous Enterprise).

This vision is being realized today. People set the direction. Agents execute the work.
