You now know that Joule Assistants interpret your intent and coordinate the work. But who does the executing? Joule Agents are the autonomous systems that handle the actual tasks, working behind the scenes under Assistant coordination to plan, act, and complete multi-step workflows across systems and domains.
This lesson explains what Joule Agents are, how they operate, how their lifecycle is governed through the AI Agent Hub, and where they are deployed across SAP's autonomous domains.
What are Joule Agents?
Joule Agents are purpose-built autonomous software systems. Each agent is designed for a specific business task or process, and it executes that task with precision across multiple steps, systems, and data sources, without requiring manual coordination at each step.
Agents are not chatbots. They do not answer questions. They act. When triggered, an agent plans the steps needed to achieve its goal, executes those steps by invoking Skills and interacting with SAP systems, monitors the results, and adapts if conditions change. The work happens behind the scenes. You see the outcome.
Joule Agents operate in three modes depending on how they are triggered. In conversational mode, you ask a question or issue a request directly in Joule, and the agent responds, handling tasks like expense report approval or purchase order creation. In embedded mode, agents work inside your existing applications, surfacing suggestions and executing actions within the workflow you are already in, without you needing to switch context. In system-triggered mode, agents run in the background, initiated by a business event, a schedule, or a system signal rather than a user request. For example, an agent can monitor trade policy changes and autonomously propose reclassifications when regulations shift.
Across all three modes, agents always operate within your organization's authorization boundaries. Every agent action carries your identity and access permissions, so agents can only act on what you are entitled to act on.
Governing Agents: The AI Agent Hub
As agent adoption grows across the enterprise, visibility and control become critical. The SAP AI Agent Hub is SAP's command center for AI governance. It provides a single, centralized view of all agents operating in your landscape: SAP-built agents, custom agents built in Joule Studio, and third-party agents from providers such as Microsoft, Google, AWS, and ServiceNow.
SAP AI Agent Hub already manages more than 130,000 agents across 150 or more customers. It is available to all SAP Business AI Platform customers as a base capability, with a premium tier available for customers with Joule Studio or AI Units.
The Hub manages the full agent lifecycle across five stages:
Discover and Provision. Find available agents from SAP's catalogue, your own library, or connected third-party systems, and deploy them into your environment with the right entitlements and access controls.
Plan and Build. Define the agent's goals, permissions, triggers, and workflows. Architecture context from SAP LeanIX is surfaced directly during agent creation to inform design decisions.
Observe and Analyze. Monitor agent activity continuously. Every decision an agent makes is logged and traceable. Performance metrics, exception rates, and execution telemetry are available for review and optimization.
Secure and Govern. Apply identity and access controls, verify agents and MCP servers, enforce compliance policies, and maintain audit trails across all agent activity.
Optimize and Decommission. Refine agent behavior based on performance data. Retire agents that are no longer needed, with full audit history preserved.
The SAP AI Agent Hub integrates with SAP LeanIX, SAP Signavio, SAP Cloud ALM, SAP Cloud Identity Services, SAP SuccessFactors, and SAP Integration Suite, giving you a connected view of agent activity across your entire technology landscape.

Hybrid Landscape Support
Joule Agents are not limited to SAP cloud deployments. A significant portion of the agent portfolio supports hybrid landscapes, including SAP S/4HANA on-premise and SAP ECC environments. This means that organizations mid-way through a cloud transformation journey can access agent-led automation in their current landscape without waiting for migration to complete.
This is the promise of RISE with SAP AI: AI value starts during your transformation, not after it. Hybrid AI enablement brings selected Joule capabilities into on-premises systems, so the Autonomous Enterprise journey begins where you are today.
