Understanding Cloud Ready Mode

Objective

After completing this lesson, you will be able to Understand the concept of Cloud-Ready Mode in SAP Master Data Governance.

Introduction of the Cloud-Ready Mode

SAP Master Data Governance on SAP S/4HANA offers the following two different modes:

  • Classic mode in SAP Master Data Governance
  • Cloud-ready mode in SAP Master Data Governance

Classic Mode in SAP Master Data Governance

Classic mode has been the standard delivery option in SAP S/4HANA for multiple years and is an alternative to cloud-ready mode in SAP Master Data Governance.

Classic mode offers a wide range of features, including apps for data quality management, consolidation, and central governance for master data domains, such as business partner, product, various financial domains, and the possibility to define custom domains.

Cloud-Ready Mode in SAP Master Data Governance

Cloud-ready mode in SAP Master Data Governance is an alternative to classic mode that enables users to adapt SAP Master Data Governance to configure and extend processes and applications. All UIs are based on the newest SAP Fiori UI technology, which allows customers to navigate seamlessly, for example, between the mass processing UI in consolidation and the single-object processing UI, and adapt the UI easily (key user adaptation).

Usage of the Cloud-ready mode:
  • Companies can choose which mode to use, while cloud-ready mode shall be recommended for new customers

  • Cloud-ready mode is required for federated master data governance, classic mode is possible for change request processing

  • Parallel usage of classic and cloud-ready mode is supported for central governance, for example, during stepwise conversion towards cloud-ready

Cloud-ready mode is available for the business partner domain with SAP S/4HANA 2023. Further domains are planned for future releases. For more information, see SAP Road Map Explorer.
User Interface based on newest SAP Fiori technology
  • User Interfaces can easily be adapted to customer needs (e.g., move or hide blocks, rename buttons, or field descriptions, etc.)

  • Focusing on the usage of "FIORI elements" to ensure consistent user experience with many other SAP applications

The figure, Introducing Cloud-Ready Mode, shows a screenshot of the business partner creation.

Cloud-ready mode enables well-known processes, plus additional functionality
  • Consistent process design across central governance, consolidation, and data quality management., e.g., allowing workflows for all relevant processes, or seamless navigation between mass-processing and single-processing user interfaces

  • Easy field extensibility via pre-defined fields which can be integrated into the user interface by using adaptation

  • Options to use cloud services (e.g., attachments or address validation), or to integrate external data providers in MDG create and change processes

Cosistent approach for the same architecture and coding in all MDG deliveries
  • SAP Master Data Governance, cloud edition (since initial release 2021)
  • SAP Master Data Governance on S/4HANA on premise and private cloud edition (as of 2023 release)
  • SAP S/4HANA Cloud for master data governance (public cloud, planned for 2025, according to SAP Road Map Explorer).

The figure, Cloud-Ready Mode, shows the configuration of the optional cloud-ready mode.

Customers can optionally activate the cloud-ready mode in their existing SAP Master Data Governance on SAP S/4HANA systems for Business Partner (from release 2023 on).

Cloud-ready mode in SAP Master Data Governance is based on the ABAP Cloud development model supporting the Core Data Services (CDS) for the data model, the ABAP RESTful Application Programming Model (RAP), and the cloud-optimized ABAP language for the business logic.

Cloud-ready mode is based on one framework, which ensures consistent configuration of consolidation, central governance, and data quality management. Currently, cloud-ready mode only supports the business partner domain. Most of the customizing settings are shared for classic and cloud-ready mode, but there are also certain additional settings for cloud-ready mode

Once you have switched on the cloud-ready mode, new apps in newest SAP Fiori design are available for central governance (single and mass processing), consolidation and data quality management, which are already part of the common framework. Classic mode central governance and cloud-ready mode can co-exist, which is typical for a transition phase.

The following features are available, if you use cloud-ready mode:
  • Federated master data governance
  • Data provider integration
  • Attachments for all processes
  • Process visualization (across systems)

Additionally, you can integrate preconfigured cloud services, for example, SAP Build Process Automation to define and visualize workflows, SAP Document Management service to add attachments to processes, and SAP Data Quality Management, microservices for location data to validate and enrich addresses.

The mode is the basis for SAP Master Data Governance, cloud edition, is available on SAP S/4HANA, and is required for federated Master Data Governance for business partners.
