Introduction
Imagine you're working with a large dataset of Computer Aided Designs (CAD) models in IPD Visualization. Over time, the number of visualizations grows, making it difficult to find the right one. You need to augment the initial CAD data so that it's easier to display the content in a manner suitable for users, such as creating visual work instructions (VWIs) for manufacturing or maintenance procedures. This lesson guides you through creating editable versions of CAD assemblies and starting to edit visualizations to better support your specific use cases.
The original CAD data from engineers provides valuable visuals for the assembly. However, it often requires augmentation to create effective content for visual work instructions (VWIs) used in manufacturing or maintenance. Additional elements like callouts or markers are frequently needed to help end-users fully understand the data. This lesson will guide you through enhancing the initial CAD data to display content in a manner that is suitable for your end users.
Source vs Editable Visualizations
CAD data imported into SAP Integrated Product Development Visualization is initially designated as a "Source" dataset and cannot be directly edited. To enable modifications, choose Create Editable Version.

Then, you can either accept the default settings, which creates an editable visualization in the same folder with the same name as the original source data, or they can customize the new visualization by adding Category, Tags, or Usage ID.

Once the editable visualization is created, it can be opened for editing by choosing Edit Visualization.

Note that the source visualization is labeled "Source" beneath its name, while the editable version has no such label. The icon next to the ... button also indicates the type of visualization, based on the actions that can be performed on it.
Editing the Visualization
With the editable version created, to open the visualization and begin augmenting the scene with additional content, choose Edit Visualization.
