Introduction to Localization as a Self-Service

Discover how 'Localization as a self-service for SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition enables localization across regions and industries, ensuring a perfect fit for every unique requirement.

What will be covered in this course?

In this course, we will delve into the essentials of localization as a self-service. You will gain a foundational understanding of how to localize an existing SAP-delivered local version or create a new customer local version. We'll also explore the specifics of defining official document numbers, utilizing payment extensibilities, and applying product-specific configurations. By the end of this course, you'll be equipped with the knowledge and skills to navigate and implement localization as a self-service effectively.

What is Localization?

Localization addresses the essential need to tailor software and services to specific locales or markets. Given that business processes and legal regulations vary from one country or region to another, a standardized solution might not universally apply. In essence, localization adapts software, like SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition, to meet the specific needs and regulatory demands of a particular region or country. As of the February 2024 (SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition 2402 release), SAP has taken strides in this domain, delivering local versions tailored for 59 countries/regions or regions, supported in 33 different languages for SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition. By offering these local versions, SAP ensures that its customers can seamlessly operate and remain compliant with local standards, no matter where they are located.

What is Localization as a Self-Service?

Localization as a self-service is an initiative by SAP designed to address the unique localization needs of its customers operating beyond the 59 local versions currently offered. While SAP provides predefined versions for certain countries/regions or regions, they recognize that these might not capture the unique nuances and requirements of every business. Hence, localization as a self-service offers the flexibility to adapt the software according to specific business and local requirements.

Using this feature, customers or their implementation partners can both extend existing SAP-delivered local versions and create new local versions that can be extended further.

Note

The Configuration Localization Tool is currently under the early adopter program. To participate in the early adopter program, you must fulfill the following criteria:

  • You must be on SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition with a 3-system landscape.

  • Your target country/region and scope items must be supported by the Configuration Localization Tool, as described in the SAP Note 3107866.

  • Either your implementation partner must be subscribed to a partner TDD system or you need to besubscribed to an SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition sandbox tenant depending on rollout plans.

If you meet the above criteria, please get in touch with your implementation partner or SAP Sales point of contact to participate in the early adopter program.

Refer to the documentation for the Configuration Localization Tool to know more details (accessible to SAP Partners only).

How does Localization as a Self-Service work?

Localization as a self-service provides two distinct options:

  1. Extend SAP-delivered local version

Customers operating in countries/regions that already have an SAP-delivered local version can use the tools and frameworks provided by SAP to carry out last-mile localization.

  2. Create a new customer local version

For countries/regions not covered by an existing SAP-delivered local version, customers can develop new customer local versions by copying a SAP-delivered local version and modifying it based on their specific country/region-specific and business needs.

To simplify the creation process for customer local version, SAP facilitates the use of best practice content from a SAP-delivered local version. This foundational content can then be updated, expanded, and integrated to align with the specific business and local legal mandates.

However, a crucial distinction exists: while SAP is responsible for software updates concerning legal changes for its SAP-delivered local version, the responsibility for legal compliance for customer local versions lies with the customers or their implementation partners. This ensures that customers have the freedom and tools to operate seamlessly and compliantly, tailored to their specific global needs.
