Extensibility in Data Migration

Custom Fields

Using the extensibility framework, certain migration objects support custom fields created in the Custom Fields app. These fields are integrated into the user interface of applications used for master data creation.

Applications for master data creation use the same APIs to transfer data to the SAP HANA database as the corresponding migration objects used for high-volume data imports.

For example, if it's possible to add a custom field to the UI of the Manage Banks - Master Data app, that field will automatically appear in the Bank migration object template when you next download the migration template.

This ensures consistency - any field available for manual data entry in the app is also available for mass data imports via the migration object.

Note

To ensure the SAP S/4HANA migration cockpit includes a new field in the source structure, you must enable the custom field for use in the relevant applications or APIs within its business context using the Custom Fields app.

Migration Object Modeler

Not all applications support custom fields. If you cannot add a custom field to a migration object template using the extensibility framework, check to see if the migration object is supported in the Migration Object Modeler app. This app allows you to customize a specific set of released migration objects.

Migration Object Modeler for Staging Tables

When migrating data using staging tables, use the Model Your Migration Objects – Migration Object Modeler app to adjust migration object templates before starting the migration. You can enhance specific SAP-released migration objects by referring to the structures and fields detailed in SAP Note 2999428.

For instance, if you need to capture additional data for the Customer object, use the modeler to add the required field. Depending on the specific migration object, you can modify the following:

Caution

Do not modify the Excel template directly by changing headers or columns, as this will corrupt the file and prevent it from being imported into the SAP S/4HANA Migration Cockpit. Instead, use the Migration Object Modeler to update the staging table structure or mapping. The tool then generates an updated template for your data migration.

Note

The business role SAP_BR_ADMINISTRATOR is required to access the SAP S/4HANA migration object modeler.

Migration Object Modeler for Direct Transfer

For data migrated using the Direct Transfer method, use the Implementation Activities app to access the migration object modeler. This allows you to edit migration object templates before starting the data migration process.

When you open the Implementation Activities app, the system displays the SAP Business Configuration structure. Navigate to the Model Your Migration Objects activity under General Business Data→Data Management→Data Migration→Data Migration to SAP S/4HANA.

As this is an SAP GUI for HTML app, the documentation is not hosted on the SAP Help Portal. Instead, you can access it directly within the SAP S/4HANA Cloud system by selecting the Information button.

Note

To use the SAP S/4HANA migration object modeler, you must be assigned the business role SAP_BR_BPC_EXPERT.
