Understanding the Concept of the Software Update Manager

The Software Update Manager 1.0 has been available since 2011. It is part of the Software Logistics Toolset 1.0.

In 2022 Software Update Manager 1.1 replaced Software Update Manager 1.0. This was done for long time maintenance of the older kernel releases.

For AS ABAP-based SAP systems, Software Update Manager 1.0/1.1 is used for target releases 740 and below, Software Update Manager 2.0 is used for target releases 750 and above.

The Software Logistics Toolset 1.0 is updated approximately three times per year.

The Software Logistics Toolset approach started with SAP NetWeaver 7.3. Each shipment usually provides improvements on already delivered, and new tools.

For further information about the delivered software logistics tools, the supported implementation processes, and the SAP application products, see Central Release Note for Software Logistics Toolset 1.0 – 1563579. Use the latest version at the start of the project. With release of the next Software Logistics Toolset Support Package Stack, the predecessor Software Update Manager Support Package (SP) version move to phase "patch on request".

What if a new SP for the Software Update Manager is delivered during project – do you have to switch or not? You do not have to use the latest SP of Software Update Manager, but it is recommended. And you always have to use the latest patch levels of a Software Update Manager SP.

For the combined conversion and transition, DMOVE2S4 approach is available. The approach allows downtime-optimization techniques like downtime-optimized DMO (doDMO) or downtime-optimized Conversion. DMOVE2S4 approach requires sufficient network connection between source and target data center. If the prerequisites cannot be met, Software Update Manager offersDMO with system move.

Both approaches of Software Update Manager, DMOVE2S4 and DMO with System Move, also support an upgrade of a source system SAP S/4HANA combined with transition to cloud. For the Lift & Shift scenario, in which the software stack remains unchanged, both approaches would technically be possible for SAP S/4HANA, however other means of copy such as HANA Tenant Copy and System Copy are recommended. Please note, that DMOVE2S4 only supports target release SAP S/4HANA.
