Building a Story

Building a Simple Story from a File

In this video, we explore a simple story and how it is built. Let's use the scenario that you have a project where you need to analyze new sales data. To do this, you create a new story. Each type of data source that you can use in your story has its advantages and disadvantages. For example, if your IT department creates and secures models as the official corporate data sources for SAP Analytics Cloud Stories, then you use these models in your projects. Using these models, you know that the data is accurate and meets your reporting and analysis needs. On the other hand, it does not offer much flexibility. IT needs to create it, and only then are you able to create a story. We'll look at models in another lesson. The option we will use in this scenario is one where the data is contained in a file. In this case, the data you need for the project is contained in a CSV file, so you will use the File option to add data to your story. Even though using a file is easy and you don't need to involve IT, you must keep in mind that there is no data governance with a file. However, you cannot be sure if the data is accurate, who is responsible for the data, and if the sources they used are reliable. You also would not be able to apply advanced security options to the data. For example, if everyone in your company has access to your story, you cannot set the data to display only for the specific people who are supposed to see it. But your team asked you to be very quick with this story, and you do not have time to wait for IT to create a model. So this story is going to be a prototype, and choosing a file as the data source for it works just perfectly.
