Analyzing Product Modeling Approaches

Product Modeling Approaches

SAP Commerce Cloud helps customers select the exact variation of a product to purchase by modeling product variance in four ways.

  1. Classification: The Classification system allows product attribute sets to be altered frequently or dynamically at runtime. We talk about this in more detail in lesson 3.
  2. Basic Product Variants: Basic product variants allow you to model products that differ only in some aspects from another product, but share the same base and most product attributes. For example, T-Shirts of various colors and sizes. This method is ideal for catalogs where the attribute sets of modeled products rarely change. We cover this in depth in lesson 5.
  3. Multidimensional Product Variants: For more complicated situations requiring greater flexibility in defining those differing attributes, we offer Multidimensional Product Variants. The details are thoroughly discussed in lesson 5.
  4. Configurable Products: Configurable products are unique in that they require user input to finalize the details of the product to be purchased. Configurable products are not covered in this learning journey. However, if you wish to learn more about them, detailed information is available in the Additional Technical Essentials Playlist: Working with Configurable Products in SAP Commerce Cloud.

Next, let's delve into the specifics of each listed product modeling approaches.
