Exploring the Technical Essentials of SAP Commerce Cloud

In this video, I’m going to discuss the Architecture of the SAP Commerce System from a technical point of view.​ ​ SAP Commerce is a multi-layered application, containing several layers. These include:​ The Database layer, the Application Server, the Platform, the Extensions that are built on top of the platform, the APIs, and finally, the Front End.​ ​ Let’s briefly discuss each of these layers.​ Let’s start with the database layer.​ Basically, it’s the layer where all the important data is stored.​ Even though it’s not a part of the system package, SAP Commerce depends on it to a greater extent. ​ Let’s discuss the Application Server. SAP Commerce comes bundled with a customized version of the Apache Tomcat Application Server.​ Among all the layers, the first true SAP Commerce layer is the Platform. It’s the home for the Core Persistence Framework that handles all interactions between the system and the database. Thanks to Platform, we don’t have to write SQL. However, we must write higher level abstractions, such as Flexible Search and Generic Data Objects.​ The Platform also contains all kinds of services. ​ Among various services, we can find high-level Business Services, Infrastructure Services, and low-level System Services. As a modular system that follows a Service Oriented Architecture, SAP Commerce has many out-of-the-box Extensions. Each of these Extensions is built for a dedicated purpose.​ You can also implement your own extensions to meet the specific requirement of your project.​ SAP Commerce offers several APIs that can be used by other entities to get access to its underlying services or data.​ For example, the listed APIs are used in the out-of-the-box front ends. In the Front- End layer, it is possible to have varied Client and Back Office Front End applications in SAP Commerce. ​ In the Front- End layer, it is possible to have varied Client and Back Office Front End applications in SAP Commerce. ​ Customers can access the Online Web Store implemented by SAP Commerce Cloud composable storefront.​ Customers can also access the store from a different Touchpoint, such as mobile app, or any other application that uses REST API to communicate with SAP Commerce.​ In general, the Backoffice Framework offers different perspectives to Managers, Administrators, and End-Users, tailored to each of their unique roles.​  In addition to this, there is SmartEdit to customize the Storefront. This completes the overview of the layers in SAP Commerce technical architecture and their main functionalities.​
