Differentiating between Transportation Management and Advanced Transportation Management

Objectives

After completing this lesson, you will be able to:

  • Differentiate between Transportation Management (formerly referred to as Basic Shipping) and Advanced Transportation Management (formerly referred to as Advanced Shipping)

Basic vs Advanced Transportation Management

In the above video you learned about basic terminology you need to know in the area of transportation management.

The Logistics Execution – Transportation (LE-TRA) compatibility package has extended usage rights until the end of 2030.

The figure above serves as SAP's representation of the technical and process aspects of transportation management. In the 1709 release, both the LE-TRA module and SAP S/4HANA Supply Chain for transportation management were technically available. This meant that the basic shipping process could be accomplished using either option. However, beyond 2030, the LE-TRA module may no longer be available, and the basic shipping process will need to be exclusively realized through SAP S/4HANA Supply Chain for transportation management. The LE-TRA module is not the target architecture within SAP S/4HANA and SAP does not plan to introduce new functionality to avoid duplication across multiple products. Hence, for new implementations, the recommendation is to use SAP S/4HANA Supply Chain for transportation management.

In the past, the LE-TRA module was included in SAP ERP Central Component (SAP ECC) licenses, and SAP Transportation Management (SAP TM) licenses were sold separately, contingent on freight-related expenditures. However, to accommodate the need for core ERP (SAP S/4HANA) licenses to encompass essential shipping functions, SAP has divided transportation management into two distinct categories:

Transportation Management (formerly referred to as Basic Shipping)

Transportation Management, formerly known as Basic Transportation, replaces the LE-TRA module, while maintaining similar capabilities. Additionally, it does not require an extra license. It serves as a streamlined version of Advanced Transportation Management, offering a subset of functionality compared to the comprehensive Advanced Transportation Management. Transportation Management and Advanced Transportation Management share the same master data objects and configuration nodes.

Advanced Transportation Management (formerly referred to as Advanced Shipping)

Advanced Transportation Management, formerly known as Advanced Shipping, provides the full scope of functionalities that were distributed across various modules, such as TPVS and LE-TRA. It provides functionalities that were not available in LE-TRA, hence an additional license is required for their utilization. For example, functions such as package building, load planning, or optimizer planning were not available in LE-TRA. Therefore, these functionalities are classified under Advanced Transportation.

The figure outlines the key distinctions between Transportation Management and Advanced Transportation Management. An additional license is necessary for early planning and the use of optimizers, among other things. Decision makers within an organization must assess whether there is a requirement for an additional license for Advanced Transportation Management.
