SAP now provides three offerings for transportation management:
- SAP Transportation Management (SAP TM) 9.6
- SAP S/4HANA Supply Chain for transportation management
- SAP S/4HANA Cloud for transportation management
SAP Transportation Management (SAP TM), which was a part of the business suite based on SAP NetWeaver, underwent functional enhancements starting from SAP TM 8.0 and continued to progress until version 9.6. However, it is important to note that this is no longer considered a mainstream product in SAP's transportation management offerings, and it is scheduled to reach the end of maintenance in 2027. All future enhancements and upgrades will be on the SAP S/4HANA offerings. Customers initiating new implementations should consider either SAP S/4HANA Supply Chain for transportation management (on-premise) or SAP S/4HANA Cloud for transportation management (public and private cloud).
Beginning with SAP S/4HANA 1709, transportation management was seamlessly integrated into SAP S/4HANA Enterprise Management. Initially, the 1709 version provided limited functionality, primarily focused on shipper-related processes. Subsequently, with the SAP S/4HANA release in 1809, it achieved functional parity with SAP Transportation Management (SAP TM) 9.6. From SAP S/4HANA 1909 onwards, subsequent releases have further expanded the functional scope of transportation management.

The release strategy for SAP S/4HANA Supply Chain for transportation management and SAP S/4HANA Cloud for transportation management editions differ. The on-premise version rolls out a new release annually, while the cloud version, which updates more frequently, launches a major release every quarter.
