<div id="content"><p tabindex="0">Now that you know the purpose of PLM, you're ready to discover the different ways its features (called "processes") can help manage products.</p><p tabindex="0">To illustrate these processes, we've created a series of videos depicting how employees at our forklift manufacturer work together.</p><p tabindex="0">After each process video, you can practice the same tasks these characters perform. In an earlier course, you learned how to create and assign business roles. Let's see how these roles work together in Product Lifecycle Management. Here are the five players you'll work with most often. As a development manager, John oversees changes his team makes, such as updates to an existing material master, revisions to a bill of materials, or BOM, or creation of a new material master, or BOM. When a change is needed, John creates a change record to start the process. As BOM engineers post updates on the metadata, he checks the change request. If it is acceptable, he approves the change request, which signals the team to start the change implementation. Once the BOM engineers have made the changes, John closes the change implementation and the change is released for the production version of the impacted object. As a production engineer, Eric makes sure that the right bills of materials, the correct metadata, are handed over to the production process. To do this, he first sets the effective date of the manufacturing BOM. Then, he copies the engineering BOM and the manufacturing BOM. He then adjusts the M-BOM for handover to production. When these revisions are complete, he releases the change. As a BOM engineer, Samar manages bill of materials master data in the organization, checks the effectivity date, and makes sure the BOM is up to date and contains all relevant components for production. This includes creating the BOM, checking, approving, and releasing the BOM version. If the production team has requested changes that require new components, Samar creates a new version by copying and revising an existing BOM to reflect the new process. When the new version of the BOM is approved, it is released. As a production planner, Bill ensures all materials required for sales order fulfillment are available for processing the production order. To do this, he runs the materials requirement planning, MRP, to the sales order. Based on the results, Phil requests changes to the sales BOM. When these changes are made, he reruns the MRP. If all materials are available, he creates the production order. As a production configuration modeler, Thomas creates configuration, profile, and building block diagrams for the final superBOM, or sBOM. To do this, he creates the class and characteristics for variants, a variant table, and a configuration profile. Thomas also creates groupings and assigns them to relevant variants. He then creates a dependency and runs a simulation. Finally, if the simulation goes well, he creates the SBOM. Now that you've met the key players in product lifecycle management, you're ready to learn how they work together. Let's get started.
