This section provides information on the releases and upgrade paths supported by the Zero Downtime Option (ZDO).
With start release SAP S/4HANA 2020, Zero Downtime Option is generally available. In particular, from SAP S/4HANA 2020 onwards, ZDO can be used as a standard feature. The general availability of ZDO for SAP S/4HANA also includes updates of feature or support package stacks within SAP S/4HANA 2020.
SAP Note 2707731 is the comprehensive entry point to get all relevant information before starting a ZDO project.
Supported Maintenance Paths of SAP S/4HANA with ZDO
The most recent version is attached to SAP Note 2707731.
Supported Products and Add-ons
Besides SAP S/4HANA 2020 (or higher), also SAP S/4HANA Foundation 2020 (or higher) is supported by ZDO. Note that the product SAP S/4HANA Foundation is not allowed to be used as standalone, but only as a foundation in combination with a defined list of add-on product versions. SAP S/4HANA supports add-ons from different vendors such as SAP or 3rd parties:
- Standard add-ons delivered by SAP for SAP S/4HANA
- Add-ons delivered by SAP Innovative Business Solution (former SAP Custom Development)
- Partner add-ons
For details, see SAP Note 2214409 - SAP S/4HANA: Compatible Add-Ons. However, not all add-ons available for SAP S/4HANA implicitly are equipped with zero-downtime maintenance capability. Hence, Software Update Manager is equipped with an automated check if ZDO can be used for the system. The selection of ZDO in the SUM UI as well as the check is described in a later lesson.
