Source System Connection Options (Overview)

The graphic shows SAP Signavio Process Insights as a target system at the top of the screen and lists the possible alternatives to connect source systems: Direct, Indirect, or for Cloud.

After you have become familiar with the supported source systems and have made a selection for your organisation, in this section we will look at how these systems can be connected to SAP Signavio Process Insights.

To connect source systems to SAP Signavio Process Insights we differenciate three cases. For source systems, a distinction is made between cloud and on-premise systems. For on-premise systems, there is also a difference between a direct and an indirect system connection.

A direct source system connection is always possible if the source system meets the necessary prerequisites. (You check this in a later section of this e-learning.) If the source system does not meet the necessary prerequisites, the system can be connected using a intermediate system. If several source systems are connected, they can also be connected together using an intermediate system. Cloud systems have their own connection.

Let´s take a closer look at on-premise systems because here we have to check if your selected source systems fulfill the requirements and if they can be connected directly.

This section gives you an overview of what you need to know depending on the type of source system you want to connect.

On-Premise Source Systems

There are two ways of connecting a on-premise source system to SAP Signavio Process Insights. You connect your SAP on-premise source system directly or you use an intermediate system. Which option you choose depends on various factors.

You use the direct system connection in the following cases:

  • Your source system meets all the prerequisites for your use case or can easily be upgraded to meet them.
  • You can upgrade your source system any time and in case new features come with new or updated prerequisites.

You use the intermediate system connection in the following cases:

  • Your source system doesn't meet all the prerequisites for your usecase or can't easily be upgraded to meet them (but you can do this for the intermediate system).
  • You can't upgrade your source system at any time and in case new features come with new or updated prerequisites (but you can do this for the intermediate system).
  • You plan to connect other SAP on-premise systems to SAP Signavio Process Insights soon. You can easily connect multiple SAP on-premise source systems to SAP Signavio Process Insights using one intermediate system that meets the prerequisites. You can connect all source systems directly to SAP Signavio Process Insights, but than they all need to meet the prerequisites.

Cloud Source Systems

Could source systems always have their own type of connection. Since cloud systems are always up-to-date by definition, the connection is not differentiated here.

Now you're on

The banner indicates that tasks need to be completed.

Based on the available licenses and the existing source systems, you decide on the appropriate source system connection option for your company.

On-Premise systems:

  • direct system connection
  • intermediate system connection

Cloud systems:

cloud connection

You will check the source system and intermediate system requirements to validate your decission in the next chapters.

Direct and Intermediate System Connection

The table lists some prerequisites and shows which steps are executed on which system if you use an intermediate system.

If you connect source systems using an intermediate system, the tasks are distributed to different systems. The overview shows which steps need to be performed on which system. In the case of a direct source system connection, all steps are executed on the source system.

System Landscapes & Plug-Ins

System Landscape - Direct Source System Connection

The image shows the system landscape of SAP Signavio Process Insights, which itself runs on SAP BTP, and the required plug-ins that must be installed on the SAP on-premise source system. With a direct system connection, both plug-ins (ST-PI and ST-A/PI) are installed on the source system.

Many source systems meet the technical requirements (separate lesson) and can be connected directly as a source to SAP Signavio Process Insgihts. The diagram outlines the system landscape and what SAP systems, applications, and components are involved when you connect SAP on-premise systems. The individual steps to get the system connected will be explained in the following sections.

System Landscape - Intermediate Source System Connection

The image shows the system landscape of SAP Signavio Process Insights, which itself runs on SAP BTP, and the required plug-ins that must be installed on the SAP on-premise source system. In the case of an indirect system connection, the ST-PI plug-in is installed on the intermediate system and the ST-A/PI plug-in is installed on the source system.

If the source system does not meet all the necessary prerequisites and cannot be upgraded to the required release and plug-ins, it is possible to set up an indirect connection. For source systems that are connected using an intermediate system, the system landscape is slightly different as the above diagram shows.

System Landscape - Cloud System Connection

The image shows the system landscape of SAP Signavio Process Insights, which itself runs on SAP BTP and the necessary components when connecting to the SAP Cloud solution SAP Ariba.

Cloud systems are always up to date and are directly connected to SAP Signavio Process Insights. For cloud systems, there is a separate system landscape that is dependent on the respective cloud solution. The following diagram outlines the system landscape and what SAP systems, applications, and components are involved when you connect SAP Ariba systems.

Plug-Ins for On-Premise Systems

The figure shows the differences between the installation of the plug-ins (ST-PI & ST-A/PI) between direct and intermediate system connection. In the case of a direct system connection, both plug-ins are installed on one system. In the case of an indirect system connection, the ST-PI plug-in is installed on the intermediate system and the ST-A/PI plug-in is installed on the source system.

As an administrator, you should understand the significance of the plug-ins and on which systems they must be installed for the possible scenarios. The two plug-ins provide the following services:

Solution Tools Plug-In (ST-PI)

The add-on ST-PI and the corresponding support packages contain the Service Data Control Center (SDCCN), which controls the collection and transfer of data analyzed during a service session. They also contain various function modules needed for data collection. Additionally, they contain reports which are executed by function modules during data collection.

SAP Signavio Process Insights uses the ST-PI plug-in to connect your SAP on-premise source system to your cloud tenant. The required ST-PI plug-in version must be installed in your source / intermediate system. The ST-PI plug-in requires an encrypted HTTPS outbound connection to SAP BTP to be set up. Using the plug-in and the HTTPS connection allows you to trigger the data transfer yourself from your SAP on-premise system. Data from your SAP on-premise system is sent directly to SAP Signavio Process Insights.

Service Tools for Applications Plug-In (ST-A/PI)

The add-on ST-A/PI contains application-specific data collectors which contribute to data collections with SDCCN, to business process monitoring or change management in SAP Solution Manager. It contains analysis tools like application analysis ST14 and trace tools like ST12. This add-on is used in SAP Signavio Process Insights to extract the needed data. To make sure that all relevant data will be collected from your source system for new content in SAP Signavio Process Insights this add-on needs to be up-to-date.

Hint

ST-PI Version Recommended

It's technically possible to use ST-PI 7.40 SP16-SP26. However, not installing the latest available version can result in limited feature availability in SAP Signavio Process Insights, performance issues in your source system, and failing data transfer.

Direct links from the business object instances in detail lists to the corresponding business object instance in the SAP on-premise source system are only available if you're using ST-PI 7.40 SP25.

Minimum ST-A/PI Version Recommended

It's technically possible to use the lower versions until ST-A/PI 01U SP3. However, if you don't install the minimum recommended version, not all the data required by the newest performance indicators is collected. Some boxes in process flows will therefore be fully missing metrics, for example, and may appear to contain 0 business object instances as a result.
