Intro to Business Capabilities

Objective

After completing this lesson, you will be able to explain what Business Capabilities are

Business Capabilities

Business Capabilities form the foundation of any business architecture and serve as stable building blocks that define what an organization does. The Business Capability Fact Sheet provides information that structures and describes the essential elements or capabilities that an organization needs to fulfill its business model.

Note

We recommend modeling only 2 levels of Business Capabilities. Our best practice metrics always refer to a maximum of 3 levels.

Business Capability deep dive

Discover why Business Capabilities are highly important, how to model them and what best ways are to configure them:

  • Why Business Capabilities are Essential

Business Capabilities are a foundational part of Enterprise Architecture that allow the business and IT teams to speak the same language.

Relating all your Applications to your Business Capability is great to visualize how IT is supporting the business, allowing you to quickly identify any redundancies or gaps.

In addition, a clearly defined Business Capability Map allows you to apply the Pace Layering method. Pace Layering is a methodology used in SAP LeanIX to classify Business Capabilities based on strategic value and pace of change. It allows you to further qualify your Business Capabilities and focus on the most important ones.
