Introducing Responsible AI at SAP

Objective

After completing this lesson, you will be able to understand SAP’s standards in AI ethics, data privacy, and security.

Introducing Responsible AI at SAP

As AI becomes deeply embedded in enterprise software, trust becomes a non-negotiable foundation. SAP’s approach to Business AI is not only about innovations, it’s about responsibility.

This lesson introduces SAP’s framework for Responsible AI, covering its ethical principles, data privacy safeguards, and security standards. You’ll learn how SAP ensures that AI is developed and deployed in ways that are fair, transparent, and safe for customers, employees, and society.

SAP's Commitment to Responsible AI

AI Ethics is an essential part of SAP’s responsible AI and social sustainability efforts, promoting innovation, product quality, and customer trust. SAP was the first European tech firm to publish AI ethics principles and form a Global AI Ethics Advisory Panel.

In 2018, it introduced its Guiding Principles for Artificial Intelligence, followed by the Global AI Ethics Policy in 2022. This policy is binding for all SAP employees and governs the development, deployment, and sale of AI systems.

In 2024, SAP updated the policy to align with the UNESCO Recommendation on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence, grounding its approach in human rights, fairness, and sustainability.

SAP’s Responsible AI framework includes:

  • Human-centered Design: Ensuring human oversight and control in AI systems.
  • Ethical Governance: All AI use cases undergo an ethics assessment. High-risk scenarios are reviewed by SAP’s AI Ethics Committee and Advisory Panel.
  • Transparency and Accountability: SAP publishes its ethical standards and assessment processes, making them accessible to customers and partners.

SAP’s leadership in this area has been recognized globally. In 2024, SAP was one of only six companies to meet all Ethical AI Indicator criteria of the World Benchmarking Alliance and won the 2025 Responsible AI Impact Award from SustainableIT.org.

Data Privacy and Protection in SAP Business AI

SAP’s AI solutions are built with privacy by design. Customer data is protected by SAP’s cloud agreements, data processing agreements, and product development schedules. Customers have full transparency and control over how their data is used.

Key safeguards include:

  • No Training of Third-Party LLMs: SAP does not share customer data with external vendors for model training.
  • Tenant Isolation: Ensures that customer data is never accessible to other customers. In addition, SAP utilizes enterprise-grade LLMs that do not retain any input or output from API interactions. As a result, customer data remains fully protected and is not accessible to other customers.
  • Consent-based Model Training: In scenarios where we need to re-train a model, customer data is used only with explicit consent and is anonymized where necessary.
  • SAP-hosted AI Infrastructure: SAP offers locally hosted AI models (e.g., Mistral, Aleph Alpha) to meet regional compliance and data sovereignty requirements.

SAP’s AI systems also comply with global standards:

  • NIST Cybersecurity Framework: SAP conducts regular audits to ensure alignment.
  • ISO 27001 Certified: Demonstrates SAP’s commitment to information security.
  • ISO 42001 Certification in Progress: SAP’s Responsible AI framework aligns with this emerging global standard for AI governance.

This video examines SAP's strategic initiatives in advancing innovation, redefining potential, and fostering trust in the realm of AI ethics and responsibility. This chapter is dedicated to an in-depth discussion of compliance.

Human Insight and Ethical Design

SAP’s Business AI is intended to support human decision-making, rather than serve as a substitute for human involvement. Most AI scenarios include a human-in-the-loop element, ensuring that users can review, correct, and guide AI outputs.

Examples include:

  • SAP Cash Application: Accountants validate AI-generated matches below a confidence threshold.
  • SAP Document AI: Users can label fields to improve OCR accuracy.
  • Joule Agents: Provide transparent decision paths and offer multiple options for user review.

SAP’s ethical design principles ensure that AI systems are:

  • Explainable: Users understand how decisions are made.
  • Revisable: Users can intervene and adjust outcomes.
  • Inclusive: AI is designed to serve diverse users and avoid bias.

Lesson Summary

SAP’s Responsible AI framework ensures that innovation is grounded in ethics, privacy, and security. From its global AI ethics policy to its data protection standards and human-centered design, SAP sets a high bar for trust in enterprise AI.

You now understand SAP's approach to developing AI that is both highly effective and grounded in strong ethical principles.
