Choose different chart types to display different aspects of your data.

Numeric Point charts are indicator charts used to show a business metrics. It requires at least one primary value, but they can have multiple primary and secondary values. In both cases, only a single data point is displayed.

Trend analysis is one of the best ways to analyze your data over a set time period. A Time Series chart is a type of trend chart that plots your data in a time frame line chart by default. Each point on the chart corresponds to a time and value.

In this lesson, you add a Numeric Point chart (Global Gross Sales) and Time Series chart to your story.

After completing the lesson, your story (in edit mode) should look similar to:

Add Gross Sales Numeric Point Chart

[Optional] Open your story in edit mode if not already.

  1. [Optional] Locate _Sales_Analytics_Visualization from the navigation bar at Files -> My Files, or Stories -> Recent Files.

  2. [Optional] Select Edit.

Create a Numeric Point chart from a placeholder.

  1. Select the ‘+’ Create a Numeric Point Chart placeholder in the Header Lane of the template.

  2. The Right Side Panel (Builder, Styling) opens.

    See data model Sales_Analytic_Model added in the previous lesson is already assigned by default to all widget placeholders in the template.

    And the Currently Selected Chart is set to Numeric Point.

Select GROSSAMOUNT as the Primary Value for the numeric point chart.

  1. Select Available Objects to get a list of all available objects in the data source, and drag GROSSAMOUNT to the the Primary Values location.

  2. Close the Available Objects panel.

[Alternative] Another option to add GROSSAMOUNT.

  1. [Alternative] Select ‘+’ Add At least 1 Account and select GROSSAMOUNT.

  2. [Alternative] Click outside the Right Side Panel.

The Numeric Point KPI should always display 2023 data.

  1. Select ‘+’ Add Filters, and then select OrderCreationDate (Member).

  2. Expand the (all) node and select 2023, then select OK.

Format the display value.

  1. Select the Styling paintbrush within the panel, and scroll down to Number Format.

  2. Set the Scale to Million, and Scale Format to Thousand, Million, Billion.

  3. Deselect the Right Side Panel (Builder, Styling) from the View menu in the Top Toolbar, to close the panel.

Remove the label of the measure.

  1. Select More Actions (…) on the Numeric Point chart.

  2. Select More Options -> Show/Hide -> deselect Primary Value Labels.

Update the chart title.

  1. Double click on GROSSAMOUNT and enter Global Gross Sales.

Add the filtered year to the title as dynamic text.

  1. Add a space after Global Gross Sales, then right click and select ‘+’ Add -> Dynamic Text.

  2. From Insert Dynamic Text, select Tile Filters & Variables, expand Global Gross Sales -> expand Filters -> select OrderCreationDate and select Create.

  3. Quality Check: Does your Global Gross Sales numeric point KPI looks like this?

Add Time Series Chart

  1. Select the ‘+’ Create a Time Series chart placeholder in the Main Lane of the template.

  2. The Right Side Panel (Builder, Styling) opens if not already open.

  3. The Time Series chart type is already selected.

  1. Select Available Objects to get a list of all available objects in the data source, and drag GROSSAMOUNT to the Accounts location, and OrderCreationDate to the Time location.

  2. Close the Available Objects panel.

[Alternative] Another option to add Gross Margin and Order Date.

  1. [Alternative] Select the ‘+’ At least 1 Account required then select GROSSAMOUNT.

  2. [Alternative] Select the ‘+’ At least 1 Dimension required then select OrderCreationDate.

Close the Right Side Panel.

  1. Deselect the Right Side Panel (Builder, Styling) from the View menu in the Top Toolbar, to close the panel.

  2. You can now see the Global Gross Sales by time in the Time Series chart.

Change the title for the time series chart.

  1. Double click on GROSSAMOUNT per OrderCreationDate and enter Gross Sales per Order Date.

  2. Quality Check: Does your Chart look like this?

  3. Save your story.

Navigate the Time Series Chart

  1. Select a different time series (e.g. 3 months) to view how the chart and slider gets updated.
