Entering the Cybersecurity Field

Objectives

After completing this lesson, you will be able to:

  • Identify the best major to enter the cybersecurity field as a college student
  • Recognize transferrable skills you can bring to cybersecurity

Entering the Cybersecurity Field (Early Talent)

Depending on the type of work you’d like to do within cybersecurity, there are different options available to enter the field. If you are a college student or are considering completing a four-year degree, consider the following majors for more the more technical areas of the field:

  • Cybersecurity: Not all higher education institutions offer a major in cybersecurity available, but as the demand for skilled professionals increases, so will the availability for this degree
  • Computer Science: This major covers a wide range of computer-related technical skills like programming, systems engineering, and networking, which are key for many roles in this field
  • Information Technology: This major focuses on using technology to solve problems, but typically does not include programming
  • Data Science: Some areas of cybersecurity rely heavily on data analysis, making this major crucial for cybersecurity

Transitioning into the Cybersecurity Field

There are multiple options for those who would like to make a career change and enter the cybersecurity field. The first is taking into account the skills that you already have and finding a role in the field where those skills can be transferable.

The following entry-level certifications are a good starting point if you're looking to enter the cybersecurity field:

  • CompTIA Security+
  • GIAC Information Security Fundamentals
  • (ISC)2 Associate
  • Microsoft Technology Associate (MTA) Security Fundamentals

Bootcamps are another option for those looking to transition into the cybersecurity field. Bootcamps are becoming a popular resource for mid-career individuals that want to make a change. Cybersecurity bootcamps provide students with the fundamental skills and knowledge to join the workforce as cybersecurity professionals.

However, bootcamps are focused on the skills you need to work in the cybersecurity field and will not provide a well-rounded education that you can get from a college degree. Bootcamps are better suited for individuals who have a good educational foundation in technology and want to expand their knowledge and skills with a focus in cybersecurity.

Early Talent Programs and Internships

Two other options regarding the transition into the cybersecurity field are Early Talent Programs and internships.

In the last few years, organizations have invested in developing the cybersecurity workforce through Early Talent Programs. These programs give young professionals an opportunity to immerse themselves in a new career with the mentoring and resources they need to succeed. They are targeted college graduates with a few years of professional experience that are looking to transition to another career.

Internships are often available for students currently pursuing a degree. Depending on the needs of the business and the major of the student, cybersecurity internships can provide students an idea of what it's like to work in the field before they graduate.
