The Product

Two statements:

  • SAP enables customers to move their SAP on-premise solutions into the cloud.

  • SAP supports customers the way they want to run their business.

SAP supports a variety of operating systems, different databases or different deployment models. Especially in times of transforming SAP landscapes to different locations or just changing underlying infrastructure, the visibility of where my system is running is challenging. To keep the light on while performing repetitive tasks become more critical, not only because of newly implemented technologies and different tools but also because the process itself changes, which needs to be tested to become the new standard.

Customer Need: Making SAP Landscape Management Easier

The figure illustrates the architecture of a typical SAP landscape. At the end, it is not easy to manage and operate these landscapes.

SAP Landscape Management is an automation and orchestration solution to:

  • simplify

  • automate

  • centralize

the management and operations of your SAP landscape.

It is now the standard solution from SAP to manage SAP HANA based landscapes.

Use SAP Landscape Management for S/4HANA to:

Simplify

the management of SAP hybrid landscapes and standardize your SAP operations.

Automate

repetitive, time-intensive administration tasks, and orchestrate to your specific needs.

Centralize

landscape operations and gain landscape-wide visibility via a single pane of glass.

The figure, Customer Needs – Drive Business Innovation, shows how customer need drives business innovation.

Product Overview

SAP Landscape Management 3.0 was previously known as SAP Landscape Virtualization Management. Due to the name, customers believed SAP Landscape Virtualization Management was just another virtual manager, for example, a vCenter, and that it could only manage a virtualized SAP landscape. However, it is an SAP Landscape Management solution that can manage all types of environments (for example, physical, virtualized, and private cloud or hybrid). The new name, SAP Landscape Management reflects these capabilities.

SAP Landscape Management helps you to manage your SAP systems and landscapes. It is built on four key capabilities.

Exploring the Product - Four Key Capabilities

The figure illustrates the four key capabilities of SAP Landscape Management and the landscape management needs:

  • Centralize Landscape Management

  • Automate SAP System Provisioning

  • Design & Extensibility

  • Manage SAP HANA Landscapes

Four Key Capabilities: Centralize Landscape Management

The figure illustrates the features of a centralized landscape management:

  • Centralized landscape operations with built-in support for system dependencies and landscape-wide visibility.

  • Capabilities: Dashboards, landscape visualization, mass-operations, scheduling engine, Rolling Kernel Switch (RKS).

  • Centralized management dashboards support you and allow you to get a quick overview of your landscape, for example you can check if your servers are running, if your SAP systems are up and running, and if there are any validation errors in your landscape.

  • Centralized management also allows you to execute mass operations, for example, you can start or stop several instances of an SAP system at one point in time.

General Key Capabilities of Landscape Management and Operations are:

  • Enhanced user experience based on SAPUI5.

  • Enhanced dashboards, pods, and landscape visualization.

  • Simplified operations including template-based execution for operations.

  • New scheduling engine to plan and execute landscape tasks.

  • Automatic sync between two SAP Landscape Management systems for high availability setups.

  • New Automation Studio for defining and executing custom processes (combination of standard and custom operations).

Four Key Capabilities: Automate SAP System Provisioning

The figure illustrates the main features of the next need: Automate SAP System provisioning:

  • End-to-end automation for SAP system provisioning tasks including post-copy or refresh automation (PCA).

  • Capabilities: (Automated) system, clone, copy, refresh, application server installation, and standalone PCA.

  • SAP Landscape Management enables you to perform E2E provisioning like system copy, system clone, or system refresh, for example you can refresh your quick address system (QAS) with data from your PROD system.

Key Capabilities of Automate SAP System Provisioning are:

  • End-to-end system provisioning support for anyDB.

  • End-to-end system provisioning support for HANA 1.0 and HANA 2.0 MDC.

  • Enable SAP HANA system replication with storage-based clone (no SAP HANA installation on secondary necessary).

  • Provisioning options for storage-, vm- or cloud-based.

  • Extended refresh variants for SAP HANA MDC (Tenant Copy, Tenant Refresh, Tenant Rename).

Four Key Capabilities: Design and Extensibility

The figure illustrates the main features of the next need: Design and Extensibility:

  • Tailor your specific needs, integrate your own procedures and orchestrate your own processes.

  • Capabilities: (Custom) operations, hooks, instances, an automation studio for creating custom processes.

  • You can extend SAP Landscape Management with your own operations, create your own E2E processes containing your own operations. For example, SAP Landscape Management calls a customer landscape management script, and SAP Landscape Management default operations (for example, starting or stopping a system).

Key Capabilities of Design and Extensibility are:

  • Use constraints to control the availability of custom processes, custom operations and custom hooks.

  • Operation templates will simplify repetitive tasks for multiple systems.

  • Creating your custom provisioning process to fit your needs or bypass technical limitations.

  • Parameterize provisioning blueprints to reuse the blueprint with changing conditions.

Four Key Capabilities: Manage SAP HANA Landscapes

Manage SAP HANA landscapes:

  • Management, provisioning, and orchestration of the SAP system and landscapes powered by SAP HANA.

  • Capabilities:

    • (Automated) system copy or refresh.

    • Takeover or failback.

    • Nar Zero Downtime Maintenance for SAP HANA.

  • SAP Landscape Management supports you with new SAP HANA features like:

    • Setting up an SAP HANA system replication via SAP Landscape Management.

    • Refreshing an SAP HANA based SAP system with the database (DB) backup of another SAP HANA based SAP system (for example, you can refresh a test system with data from your productive system).

Key Capabilities of SAP HANA Management are:

  • Simplified provisioning and management of SAP HANA multitenant database container (MDC) setups.

  • Fully automated system refresh procedure for SAP HANA using backup and restore.

  • Fully automated procedure to setup and monitor SAP HANA system replication.

  • Fully automated procedure for SAP HANA failback and near Zero Downtime takeover.

  • Near Zero Downtime SAP HANA Update (on Primary Tier).

  • Near Zero Downtime Maintenance for SAP HANA (for example, OS updates and hardware maintenance).
