Upgrading a SAP HANA Cloud Database

In this lesson, you'll learn how to check the version of your SAP HANA Cloud database instance. You'll see how to upgrade your SAP HANA Cloud database instance to the current available version. After the update, you can check the version of your SAP HANA Cloud database instance.

As a database administrator, you want to upgrade your companies SAP HANA Cloud database, but, before the upgrade, you want to check the version of the database to be sure that everything is prepared.

Before you upgrade your SAP HANA Cloud database instance, you want to know the current version in order to check the upgrade notes for possible changes and fixes.

For quick navigation in the SAP HANA cockpit Overview page search for Database Information (1) using the search field.

The Database Information (2) card is found. In the card, you can already see the SAP HANA Version. Select the Database Information if you need more information like SAP HANA Version History or Installed Plugin version.

As a database administrator, you want to upgrade your companies SAP HANA Cloud database to the current available version.

Upgrading SAP HANA Cloud is very easy. With only a few clicks, you can perform the upgrade. It's also quite fast, as it only takes the time of a shutdown and start-up of the database.

You still need to manage this process in such a way that the upgrade doesn't interfere with business hours.

From the SAP BTP cockpit, navigate to your SAP BTP subaccount (1), in the navigation panel select Instances and subscriptions (2), and select the SAP HANA Cloud (3) to open the SAP HANA Cloud Central.

The SAP HANA Cloud Central (1) opens in a new browser tab. This makes it easier to navigate between the SAP HANA Cloud Central and SAP BTP Cockpit.

To open the Actions Menu for the selected cloud database, select the °°° (2) button. From the Actions menu, select the Upgrade or Patch (3) option to start the SAP HANA Cloud database instance update or patch.

If an upgrade to a new SAP HANA Cloud version is available, the Upgrade option will be active. If a new revision for the current SAP HANA Cloud version is available, the Patch option will be active.

As of QRC 03/2022 the database administrator can also choose the version to use for the upgrade. The selection is two releases in the past plus the current release. This means with release QRC 03/2022, you could also select QRC 02/2022 or QRC 01/2022 for an upgrade.

As soon as you start the upgrade, the system displays an information message that the upgrade involves a restart of your SAP HANA Cloud database instance. Confirm this message by selecting the Yes button.

In the SAP HANA Cloud Central, you'll see your database stopping, upgrading, starting, and running. This process is fully automated and after a few minutes the database status is running again.

As a database administrator, you've upgraded your companies SAP HANA Cloud database, and now you want to check the version of the database to make sure that everything went fine.

After you upgraded your SAP HANA Cloud database instance, you want to now the current version of the database.
