Managing Allocations

Allocations are required if there is no direct relationship of energy flows to the production process or if the information is not available in ERP.

The types of emissions without allocation to a product are as follows:

1. Manual Emissions

   • Manual emissions are all those emissions that are not energy or material consumption like emissions in chemical processes.

   • Manual emissions encompass GHG protocol scope 1 and 2 emissions (such as fugitive emissions and process emissions such as chemical emissions) and all the entities that do not consume energy or materials directly like in the previous scenarios.

     Entities that do not directly consume energy or materials are also included in manual emissions. They can be assigned to an allocation scheme, which dictates how these emissions are processed and identifies the products responsible for them. These emissions can be distributed to the products using predetermined factors. For instance, if cooling agent is used during production, the resulting emissions are allocated to the products based on these fixed factors.

     The figure indicates an example of the manual emission calculation, where emissions are distributed manually by setting the distribution factors.

     
2. Emissions From Facilities

   Facilities like warehouses need cooling systems or lights. These emissions cannot be allocated to a specific product directly, but the emissions need to be distributed based on specific rules to the products stored in the warehouse.

3. Emissions From Auxiliary Materials

   Auxiliary materials like lubricants which are required to ensure the production resources are operating smoothly. At the end of the period there is only an absolute number of consumed material and not consumption per resource.

   Note

   This functionality to allocate emissions from auxiliary materials is not available in the current release but planned for a future release.

Further, you can allocate emissions manually to all GHG scope 1, 2, or 3 categories.

The allocation functionality enables you to allocate emissions that cannot be directly allocated to a specific product. Examples are shown in the following figures, Management of Allocations (1) and Management of Allocations (2).
