Commenting on Data

Objective

After completing this lesson, you will be able to view and add comments on data cells in a workbook.

Data Point Commenting

The SAP Analytics Cloud, add-in for Microsoft Excel supports data point commenting for tables based on SAP Analytics Cloud models. Comments allow you and your team to annotate specific data values in a table, for example, to explain a forecast entry or flag an anomaly.

Comments are synchronized bidirectionally with SAP Analytics Cloud. This means:

  • Comments you create in the Excel add-in are visible in SAP Analytics Cloud.
  • Comments created in SAP Analytics Cloud are visible in the Excel add-in.

Note

Data point commenting must be enabled by the workbook designer for the workbook. Not all workbooks will have this feature enabled.

Activating Comments

First you need to activate commenting. From the Designer panel, select the More menu, and from the drop-down choose Commenting, and then one or both desired commenting options: Data Point Commenting or Dimension Commenting.

Adding and Viewing Comments

When data point commenting is enabled, a dedicated Data Point Comment tab appears in the Designer panel. Select a data cell in the table to view any existing comments for that cell and to add a new comment.

To add a comment:

  1. Select the data cell you want to comment on.
  2. Open the Data Point Comment tab in the Designer panel.
  3. Type your comment and submit it.
From the comment tab add your comment

Comments are displayed as a thread. You cannot submit an empty comment, and you cannot edit an existing comment to make it empty.

Note

Even users with Viewer permissions can add comments, provided the workbook designer has enabled data point commenting for the workbook.

Summary

You should now be able to view and add comments on data cells in a workbook.
