Data is the core of what makes Artificial Intelligence (AI) valuable, and SAP provides both the foundation (SAP Business Technology Platform) and services (SAP Business Data Cloud, Integration Suite) that make it possible to easily connect and model data across different applications.

SAP also has strategic partnerships with other leaders in the industry where we embed their technology into our products (Microsoft Teams, Google Workspace, and others), or we enable customers to build custom machine learning models on SAP data in a secure platform.

SAP Business AI is embedded across the portfolio

SAP Business AI is a product that embeds artificial intelligence (AI) across SAP's entire portfolio of solutions. SAP Business AI is designed to transform how organizations operate by embedding intelligence directly into the business processes that power their operations. Rather than treating AI as a standalone tool, SAP integrates it into the core applications of the SAP ecosystem.

The value proposition of SAP Business AI is built on three pillars:

Digital Assistant: Joule

SAP Joule is the next-generation digital assistant "copilot", that uses generative artificial intelligence (AI). With generative AI, Joule uses data about a user's past historical patterns in addition to their new inputs to generate fresh content, information, and recommendations.

Joule acts as a single, conversational interface across the entire SAP landscape. Instead of navigating through multiple menus or switching between different cloud solutions (such as SAP S/4HANA Cloud, SAP SuccessFactors, or SAP Customer Experience), users can interact with Joule to retrieve information or execute tasks. This creates a consistent and streamlined experience, regardless of which underlying application is being utilized.

To use SAP Joule, employees select the diamond icon in the top right corner, and ask questions or describe an issue they're trying to resolve. Joule provides answers based on the wealth of business data in the customer's own system. In addition, business processes continue to be enhanced with intelligent capabilities such as:

  • Intelligent guidance to simplify error resolution.
  • AI-assisted anomaly detection to protect the business against fraud.
  • Automation in communication-heavy business processes.
  • On-screen recommendations to simplify buying while remaining compliant.

Joule as the entry point to the suite of Cloud Applications

As an entry point, Joule simplifies complex workflows by understanding user intent. Users can ask Joule to find specific reports, trigger business processes, or navigate to specific functional areas using natural language. For example, a user can tell Joule to "view my team's performance reviews," and Joule will immediately surface the relevant data from SAP SuccessFactors, bypassing manual navigation.

Joule providesimmediate access to business data by pulling information from across the suite. Because it is grounded in the "Business Data Fabric" of SAP, it doesn't just provide general AI answers; it provides specific insights based on the organization's actual data. Joule maintains the rigorous security and privacy standards of the SAP cloud environment. As the gateway to sensitive business applications, it ensures that users only access data and functions for which they have authorized permissions. This makes it a secure, reliable starting point for all professional activities within the SAP ecosystem.

Systems of AI Agents

SAP is evolving Joule from a generative AI copilot into a system of AI agents designed to handle complex, cross-functional business processes. These agents move beyond simple conversational support to executing multi-step tasks autonomously or with human supervision.

AI agents are specialized autonomous capabilities within Joule that can "reason," plan, and execute sophisticated workflows across different SAP modules. They act as a collaborative "digital workforce" that bridges silos between departments like Finance, Supply Chain, and HR.

Multiple agents can work together. For example, a "Dispute Management Agent" might work with a "Credit Manager Agent" to resolve a payment discrepancy by analyzing invoices, checking communication history, and suggesting a resolution.
