Filtering Dynamically Using Element Links

Objective

After completing this lesson, you will be able to create element links to dynamically filter related report elements in a Web Intelligence document.

Dynamic Filtering Using Element Links

Element links in Web Intelligence connect different parts of your report. They let you create a link between report elements..

When you select an item in one report element, such as a bar in a chart, the linked element, such as a table, shows only related data. This helps you explore data in more detail without running a new report or moving to another screen.

A pie chart labeled as the source links to a table labeled as the target of the element link in Report 1.

Example

You can view a report with a bar chart that shows total sales by region, such as North, East, South, and West. Below the chart, a table lists each sales representative and their results.

You can link the region chart to the sales representative table. When you select the North bar, the table updates to show only the sales representatives and their results for that region.

This feature lets you explore regional results and find top performers without leaving the page.

Add an Element Link

Add an element link with the mouse context menu.

Right-click a chart to add an element link, then select the target.

Use an Element Link

In Reading mode, use an element link.

Filter bar allows selecting a state, with options to reset all controls, reset the selected state, and view the chosen value, currently New York.

Let's Summarize What You've Learned

  • Element links connect different report elements, enabling interactive, dynamic filtering within a Web Intelligence report.
  • Clicking a linked item in one element automatically filters and updates related data in another element.
  • Element links help users explore data details quickly, without running new reports or leaving the current page.
