Outlining Calculation Contexts

Objective

After completing this lesson, you will be able to identify and explain the concept of calculation context in a SAP Web Intelligence document.

Dynamic Calculations

Each measure uses a default calculation context based on its location in the report. The figures returned by a measure depend on the dimensions with which it is associated. This combination of dimensions represents the calculation context.

This example describes the default calculation context of the measures in a simple report. The report shows quantity sold generated by category, and is split into sections by product line.

Report total, section total, body, and block total labels identify corresponding sales summary values.

Let's Summarize What You've Learned

  • Understand that a measure’s calculation context depends on its associated dimensions in a report.
  • Recognize how calculation context affects the figures returned by a measure.
  • Identify the default calculation context in reports with multiple dimensions.

Business Example

Your manager asks you to analyze the annual sales performance for all products containing the word "stretch" in their name. Create a detailed report showing the price, quantity, and total revenue for each item, broken down by year. To provide a clear overview, display the total quantity sold and total revenue at the beginning of each year's section.
