Viewing Data

Objective

After completing this lesson, you will be able to navigate and use data mode to preview a Web Intelligence document's dataset.

Data Mode

Watch the video to introduce the Data mode.

The components

This mode includes two components:

  • The Dataset view, where you can view the dataset as a table or explore it using facets.
  • The Graph panel, which shows a graph of the document’s data sources, queries, and cubes.

To switch to Data mode, select Data in the Application mode drop-down list.

Dataset View

When you select a cube in the Main panel or the Graph panel, a new tab opens in the Dataset view. This tab displays the dataset for the selected cube.

The Sales data table with six rows and three columns is displayed from the Graph panel or the Objects tab.

Table Display

In Dataset view, the cube dataset appears as a flat table by default. This table can display many rows quickly because it does not include reporting or formatting features.

The first column shows the row number.

To show or hide duplicate rows, click the Distinct Values button.

The table includes a numbered Line column for each row, and a button enables or disables distinct values mode.

You can choose which columns to display and set their order In the Build panelReport Element Data tabFeeding sub-tab.

Feeding sub-tab on the right lists assigned data fields—State, Store name, and Sales revenue.

Facets Display

You see one facet for each dimension of the selected cube.

Each facet has two columns:

  • The first column lists the values for the dimension. To open a contextual menu, select More Actions in the first column header. You can then:
    • Sort the displayed dimension in ascending or descending order.
    • Apply a transformation to the values.
  • The second column shows how many times each value appears in the dataset. To open a contextual menu, select More Actions in the second column header. You can then:
    • Sort the measure (count by default) in ascending or descending order.
    • Choose another measure from the cube to show its aggregation for each value of the dimension.
Contextual menu in the Objectives facet’s Count column offers sorting and aggregation options.

Graph Panel

The Graph panel shows your document’s data sources, queries, cubes, and their relationships. Each node for a query or cube includes statistics, such as the refresh date and the number of rows.

If a query has multiple flows, the panel shows each flow. The graph helps you manage documents with many data sources, especially when you combine them.

The Graph panel includes a toolbar with several actions.

Highlighted tooltips explain how to hide datasources, zoom the Graph panel, and maximize the Graph panel by hiding the dataset view.

In this unit, you will learn how to use the Graph panel.

Let's Summarize What You've Learned

  • Use Data mode in Web Intelligence to model, preview, and transform your data efficiently.
  • Explore datasets as tables or facets to review, filter, and analyze data values and measures.
  • Combine data flows and manage data sources using the Graph panel for better document organization.
