Creating MBOMs based on EBOM using Visual Enterprise Manufacturing Planner (VEMP)

Objective

After completing this lesson, you will be able to execute the Visual Enterprise Manufacturing Planner to convert EBOM into MBOM.

Visual Enterprise Manufacturing Planner

The Visual Enterprise Manufacturing Planner (VEMP) helps create and manage manufacturing structures (MBOMs and routings) using engineering BOMs (EBOMs) as input through a visual process. It assists in transferring BOMs linked to both 3D models and non-visual forms.

VEMP, not limited to SAP S/4HANA PEO, supports various BOM conversion scenarios based on input data. Planning can start using EBOMs from Engineering Snapshots or an engineering document. This document should have the necessary RH or VDS file for 3D model and source structure visualization.

VEMP Cockpit

The VEMP cockpit has three panels: Source, Working, and Target. Each includes a tree or list view with graphics.

  • Source Panel: Holds the source BOM and geometry. Select components for planning, transfer them to the Working Panel or directly to the Target Panel if no changes are needed.
  • Working Panel: Features the selected material structure. Edit a single-level MBOM, link routing, allocate components, and commit changes to the Target Panel. Structure edits only happen here.
  • Target Panel: Displays planned geometry. Locate unplanned parts and move them to the Working Panel for further editing if necessary.

Each panel has standard icons for display control. Panels can be swapped by dragging, or closed to resize others, except the final panel. Panels can also be detached by dragging; returning them reverses the process, with a blue overlay indicating the docking location.

VEMP allows you to perform the following tasks:

  • Visualize a source structure in the Source Panel while using filter buttons to hide or display only parts of the whole structure.
  • Restructure a source structure in the Working Panel (for example, adding additional layer or sub-assemblies).
  • Create, edit, or remove a routing from an MBOM.
  • Allocate or reallocate components from the routing operations (component allocation).
  • Save the completed manufacturing structure in the Target Panel which also saves it to SAP S/4HANA PEO where the MBOM and routing are updated accordingly.
  • Release an EBOM/MBOM.

Note

SAP 3D Visual Enterprise Structure Manager supports only VDS and RH file formats generated from SAP 3D Visual Enterprise Generator.

Before you can work with VEMP in SAP S/4HANA PEO, you must have installed locally, the recent versions of the following additional software:

You must also have completed the following tasks:

  • Configured the SAP Content Server
  • Ensured that the BOM usage assigned for the planning scenario 05 is the one relevant for versioned production in Customizing (SPRO) under Logistics - GeneralProduct Lifecycle Management (PLM)Visual Enterprise PlannerVisual ManufacturingPlannerConfigure Planning Scenario.

Summary

This lesson focuses on using the Visual Enterprise Manufacturing Planner (VEMP) to convert engineering BOMs (EBOMs) into manufacturing BOMs (MBOMs). VEMP facilitates visual and efficient management of manufacturing structures within SAP S/4HANA PEO.

  • VEMP Cockpit Panels: Source, Working, and Target panels manage BOM structures through tree or list views with interactive graphics.
  • EBOM to MBOM Conversion: VEMP allows restructuring, routing creation, and component allocation for efficient BOM transformation.
  • Tool and Software Requirements: Ensure installation of Visual Enterprise Viewer and Structure Manager, and configure SAP Content Server.
  • File Formats Supported: Visual Enterprise supports VDS and RH formats for 3D model visualization during planning scenarios.

Create MBOMs with the Visual Enterprise Manufacturing Planner

Business Example

Eric is a production engineer in the low-volume A&D Company focusing on the final assembly of complex products. The company would like to start modeling its production process in SAP S/4HANA PEO. Eric has been given the task to perform the EBOM to MBOM handover. Starting from the planning scope which he prepared in a previous step, he launches the Visual Enterprise Manufacturing Planner (VEMP) to create the MBOM based on a 3D visual representation of the source EBOM. In the same step he can also release the MBOM in VEMP or do it later in the Maintain Bill of Material or Manage Shop Floor Routings apps.
