Explaining Engineering Snapshots

Objective

After completing this lesson, you will be able to explain the purpose of the handover process using Engineering Snapshots from PLM to Production Engineering.

Production Engineering Process Flow

The Engineering Snapshot, introduced in SAP S/4HANA PEO 2020, simplifies transferring complex assemblies from PLM to PEO. It packages multi-layer engineering BOMs, 3D visuals, documents, and product manufacturing information into cohesive units called Engineering Snapshots.

flow showing how snapshots are packaged multi-layer engineering BOM structures along with their 3D visuals and supporting artifacts like documents and other product manufacturing information (PMI)

Previously, new eBOMs and changes were transferred on an individual basis. This new concept ensures that the original engineering intent is completely and consistently transferred to the production system. Artifacts and related eBOMs are grouped together in an Engineering Snapshot.

If there's a change to eBOMs within an Engineering Snapshot, a new revision is released. This revision automatically transfers through the TDMI interface from the PLM to the ERP system. The production engineer is promptly notified of a new revision via the SAP Fiori app, Monitor Engineering Snapshots. This app shows the revision's content and details the specific changes.

From here the production engineer launches the follow-up process steps such as creation of a manufacturing change record and conversion of engineering BOMs to manufacturing BOMs.

Alternative BOM Creation

3D engineering BOMs can also be transferred individually to SAP S/4HANA PEO. In this scenario, a document info record with the 3D visual file (.VDS) is created. It can be converted into a version-controlled engineering BOM using the Visual Enterprise Manufacturing Planner (VEMP). If a visual is unavailable, you can directly create a version-controlled EBOM or MBOM in SAP S/4HANA PEO using the Maintain Bill of Material app. The Manage unassigned EBOMs app is then used to launch VEMP for EBOM to MBOM conversion if needed.

Summary

This lesson explains the handover process using Engineering Snapshots to transfer assemblies from PLM to Production Engineering in SAP S/4HANA PEO.

  • Engineering Snapshots package eBOMs, visuals, and documents for cohesive production system transfer.
  • eBOM changes trigger new revisions, automatically sent to ERP via TDMI interface.
  • Production engineers receive revision alerts through the SAP Fiori app.
  • Engineers handle follow-up actions like creating change records and converting eBOMs to mBOMs.

Monitor Engineering Snapshots

Business Example

Eric is a production engineer in the low-volume A&D Company focusing on the final assembly of complex products. The company would like to start modeling its production process in SAP S/4HANA PEO. The company has implemented the PDMI/PLMSI interface for automatic transfer of engineering data from a PLM system to SAP S/4HANA PEO. To view the arrival of new or changed engineering data he uses the Monitor Engineering Snapshots app. He examines the Snapshot content and chooses the follow-up process steps.
