Introducing the Standard Order Management Workflow

Beyond the Buy Button

Great customer experiences don’t end once the order confirmation arrives. A lot can still go right or wrong on the journey from a single purchase to long‑term customer loyalty.

Throughout this course, we’ll follow Haru, a photography enthusiast, as he treats himself to some new equipment. We’ll track his order through the exciting period between clicking the buy button and unboxing his new gear.

This image shows a picture of Haru Tanaka, the customer we will follow in this course.

We’ll begin by having Haru place an order on the storefront, then explore what needs to happen behind the scenes for that order to reach his door.

Once an order is placed, the correct item still needs to reach the right customer as quickly and efficiently as possible. This process can become surprisingly complex. SAP offers solutions for advanced scenarios through SAP Order Management Services. As the leading e‑commerce platform, SAP Commerce Cloud also includes built‑in order management capabilities that help companies orchestrate their orders.

Note

SAP Order Management Services refers to a offering for more complex order scenarios and must be purchased separately from SAP Commerce Cloud. The Order Management Services Module is part of SAP Commerce Cloud and provides the functionality we’ll discuss in this course. To avoid confusion, we’ll simply be referring to Order Management in this course.

While every business can adapt the process during implementation, the standard workflow generally follows this outline:

Beyond processing customer orders, companies can decide whether to discard or resell returns, choose standard or custom strategies for determining fulfillment locations, manage picking items, shipping, and much more. Without requiring additional software, SAP Commerce Cloud ensures orders are sourced efficiently and delivered at the right time, to the right place.
