When customizing a classification system, the first step is to consider whether adjustments to the standard features are necessary. In this video, we'll examine a few business scenarios in which customization can make classification even more useful. In a manufacturing organization, for instance, customizing classification can help manage diverse operations and documentation across different departments. The construction team might want a combi class that allows the assignment of both material masters and documents. As a result, the team could categorize and manage physical materials like steel beams and concrete while also associating related documents such as blueprints, safety guidelines, and compliance certificates. This integrated approach simplifies tracking and retrieving all relevant data for a particular construction project. The work scheduling department at the same organization may need to classify material masters on a plant-specific basis. This means assigning a material multiple times with different properties for each plant. In organizations with multiple manufacturing plants, the needs and parameters for using materials vary significantly. The work scheduling team might need to assign the same material multiple times with plant-specific properties. For example, an adhesive might have different curing times or storage conditions depending on the local climate of each plant. Customizing classifications enables more precise planning and resource management. The IT department, meanwhile, may want to restrict authorization to maintain user settings. What could a possible business example for this customizing chapter look like? We check the standard customizing and consider whether adjustments are necessary. Let's start by customizing the characteristics. To do this, go to the SAP menu in the SAP GUI. Here, Tools, Customizing, IMG, Execute Project = Transaction SPRO.  Here we choose SAP Reference IMG or Function Key F5 in the Implementation Guide, Cross Application Components, Classification System. And here is the first characteristic entry. This entry contains five sub-items. Let's start with the first sub-point, Define Default Settings. These are default values that are effective when characteristics are created. We only see a value here, Status 1. This stands for Released. Let's test this on the left in another session. Here we are in the Classification group on the Fiori Launchpad and start the Manage Characteristics tile. This is where the Create button is displayed. We need to give the characteristic a name, for example, New, Enter. And we can see that the settings and customizing are effective. The status 1 equals released is proposed. There are no more default values in our example. What does status 1 equals released mean? You can set this in customizing in the third sub-item. But before that, let's look at the second sub-item, define characteristic groups. Here we find this list. But that's all. There are no other settings here. Only a name and a description exist here. What effects does this customizing step have? Back in our new feature. Here, this customizing activity generates the F4 help, the input help. As already mentioned at the beginning of the training, this group has no operational significance. It doesn't do anything. Nevertheless, it is popular because you can search for and evaluate it. Similarly, there are other groups that we then no longer have to look at in customizing. the class groups, the dependency groups, the variant table groups, the variant function groups. Oh, an error message. We always need a description. We also always need a data type. Back to customizing. Customizing of the status in the third sub-item. What does status one equals release mean? Here is no need to change anything. Someone might want to work with distribution locks for application link enabling, ALE for short. An entry is then required here. What does status two equals lock mean? What does status zero equals in preparation mean? The last two points include the topic of templates. Let's start with the last point. Here you can define complete templates. No one did that. This means that there are no entries in the F4 help or in the input help again on the left in the characteristic maintenance. You don't really need complete templates either. If someone needs a template, they can put them together from template characters. This is defined here in the penultimate sub-item. What does this mean? How to read this table? We have entered the data type char in the characteristic. This means that all lines except the last two are important. The last two rows are for data type NUM. What does this list mean? If I want to have a digit in the data type char, I use an N in the template. N has usage 1 equals numerical character. If I want to have a letter in the data type char, I use an A in the template. I has usage 2 equals alphabetical character. If I want to have any character in the data type char, I use AC in the template. C has usage 3 equals character. other characters are separators. Here, you would only change something in customizing if you require more separators. In our example on the left, this template would later define that the input consists of 8 characters. Two letters. One hyphen. Two digits. One hyphen. Any two characters. This was characteristic customizing.
