Explaining Visualization and Operations

Objective

After completing this lesson, you will be able to visualize the current state of a complex SAP landscape at a glance

Landscape Visualization

You can use Working Sets to personalize the personal view dependent on your needs, for example, you can show only production data. You can switch on or off the visibility of the needed pools or those suitable for your current work.

Working Sets need to be created within your user menu in SAP Landscape Management (in the upper right corner choose UserSettingsWorking Sets.

Pod Types

Different pod types can be added to the dashboard.

Landscape Visualization – Pod Types

PodDescription
Instances

Managed entities, for example, a complete SAP system or any set of components of an SAP system such as the central instance, database instance, and so on. This pod shows the overall status of the individual instances.

Hosts

Physical or virtual hosts on which instances run. This pod shows the status of the hosts in the system.

Virtual Hosts

Virtual host is the software implementation of a machine (that is, a computer) on which instances can run. Each virtual host is an isolated computing environment that runs an operating system and either an entire SAP system or any of its comprised components (for example, instances).

Activities

An activity is a sequence of actions that are executed when an operation is triggered, for example, to stop a system. This pod shows the status of these actions, for example, successful or failed.

Validation

This pod shows the status of all validations in the system.

Systems

This pod shows the status of the system.

The figure Landscape Visualization — Personalizing Pod Settings shows how to personalize pod settings.

The figure Landscape Visualization — Removing Pods shows how to remove pods.

Landscape Entities in Graphical Form

The figure Landscape Visualization — Landscape Entities in Graphical Form shows how you can view the landscape entities and their relationship in a graphical form. You can drill down to receive more detailed information.

You can view the SAP Landscape Management landscape entities, for example, pools and their relationship, in a graphical form. For example, the dependencies between SAP systems are shown. If you maintained it, you can view the network to which your system belongs or which Virtualization Manager managed the used hosts.

Tile Pool

The figure Landscape Visualization — Tile Pool provides an example of the drill down in the Pool tile. In the figure, you can see the dependencies between SAP systems BWP and CRP, both of which are dependent on a running CI of SAP ERP. You can also see on which server the instances of SAP ERP are running.

Tile Storage Managers

The figure Landscape Visualization — Tile Storage Managers provides an example of the drill down in the Storage Managers tile.

Intersystem Dependency Levels

SAP Landscape Management can also show you intersystem dependencies as described in the table, Intersystem Dependency Levels in SAP Landscape Management.

Intersystem Dependency Levels in SAP Landscape Management

Intersystem Dependency LevelDescription
System Level

Shows the dependency between the selected instances in the system and the target system only. For example, BW is dependent on SAP ERP.

Instance Level

Shows the dependency between the selected instances in the system and the instances of the target system. For example, BW CI is dependent on running SAP ERP CI.

Chain of Dependent Systems

Shows the dependency of the selected system with the entire set of systems in the whole landscape. For example, BW & CRM are dependent on ERP.

Chain of Dependent Instances

Shows the dependency between the selected instances in the system with the entire set of instances in the whole landscape of the system.

SAP Database Control Center

SAP Landscape Management provides you access to the SAP Database Control Center (DCC), right from the UI. Basic instance configuration needs to be done for the SAP DCC beforehand.

The SAP DCC offers various options, such as:

  • Aggregate monitoring of SAP database products, including SAP HANA.

  • Manage the cockpits (management consoles) that manage the database products.

SAP Landscape Management also offers various monitoring options.

Monitoring Options in SAP Landscape Management

Managing activities in the Activity Viewer

Use this procedure to manage activities related to an operation that is performed.

Operations executed via SAP Landscape Management, for example Stop or Start offer step by step monitoring and allow you to watch every step executed and what is happening.

Working with logs

You want to monitor executed operations or charges.

Shows you detailed information about every activity step carried out, for example, which commands are executed at the start of instances (sapcontrol –function start).

Performance monitoring

Performance monitoring enables you to display metrics for specific entities (such as SAP systems, specific instances, or virtual machines) for a specific time period.

Shows you the monitoring data of your systems, like response time for systems and CPU usage for hosts.

Reporting

SAP Landscape Management integrates and uses SAP Crystal Reports to provide reports that you can run on demand. For example, the pool summary report displays the number of the number of systems, application servers, and hosts for each managed pool.

Downloading support information

You download a support information ZIP file to attach to a customer incident.

Note

Reporting is not available anymore in latest releases. The course will be updated later to reflect this.

Activity Viewer

The figure Landscape Visualization – Activity Viewer shows how the activity viewer displays an overview of all the activities that are currently running or have previously been executed.

In the Activity Viewer, you receive an overview of activities that are currently running or have previously been executed. You can view detailed information, such as the status of the activity steps, the dependencies between those activity steps, and the corresponding log details. You can monitor current executed activities or operations like Start or Stop. The Activity Viewer shows detailed steps of activities. You can also find log entries for troubleshooting activities in the Activity Viewer.

Performance Monitoring

The figure, Landscape Visualization – Performance Monitoring, shows the various metrics offered by SAP Landscape Management, such as Display Front-End Response Time, Instance State, and so on. You can select several entities at once.

Performance monitoring enables you to display metrics for specific entities (such as SAP systems, specific instances, or virtual machines) for a specific time period. You can check performance of systems like response time and check CPU usage, for hosts connected to SAP Landscape Management.

Performance Monitoring: Example

The figure, Landscape Visualization – Performance Monitoring: Example, shows an example graph of performance monitoring.

Landscape Visualization — Reporting

ReportDefinition
Pool Summary Report

Displays the number of systems, application servers, and hosts for each managed pool.

Pool Detail Report

Lists the system in each managed pool (for example, System ID and System Name)

SAP System Load Report

Lists all managed systems and their system load information (for example, CPU usage and memory usage)

SAP System Load Report (Top 10 CPU)

Lists the 10 systems with the highest CPU usage

SAP System Load Report (Top 10 Memory)

Lists the 10 systems with the highest memory usage

VM List Report

Displays information about the managed virtual hosts

System Provisioning and Refresh Report

Displays the provisioning and refresh history of SAP Landscape Management Lists each operation (copy, clone, refresh, and rename) that is executed in the specified period

SAP Landscape Management 3.0 SP03 integrates and uses SAP Crystal Reports to provide reports that you can run on demand. For example, the pool summary report shows the number of systems, application servers, and hosts for each pool. The Pool Detail Report shows all of the systems in each managed pool. SAP System Load Report shows all the systems and their load, for example, CPU usage and memory usage. The Top 10 Report lists the systems with the highest CPU and memory usage. The VM List Report displays information about managed virtual hosts like CPU count, memory, and physical host names.

Downloading Support Information

The figure Landscape Visualization – Downloading Support Information shows how to download support information in SAP Landscape Management.

The support information includes technical information. For example:

  • The SAP Landscape Management version and edition installed.

  • Configuration parameters.

  • Logs with IP addresses.

  • Host names.

  • Mount points.

  • Instance numbers.

  • User names without passwords.

It does not contain any password data or security-relevant information. You can download a support information ZIP file to attach it to a customer incident.
