Describing Team Goals

Objective

After completing this lesson, you will be able to describe the Team Goals functionality in Goal Management.

Overview of Team Goals

Team Goals is a feature that allows managers to create, update, and assign goals for their team members without having to include the goals in their own Goal Plan. It effectively allows the manager to simply manage and monitor the goals they set for their team, without having to achieve the goals directly.

Team Goals functionality is enabled from Goal Management Feature Settings, but there is an additional dependency on the Goal Plan template. You can verify if an attribute that allows the use of Team Goals is enabled for your templates, and if not, you can contact SAP Support or an SAP Consultant to configure it.

Users can search for team goals by goal name or assignee directly from the top of the Manage Team Goals page. They can enter a goal name, an assignee's name, or use both criteria together to quickly narrow down the list of displayed team goals, making it easier to locate and manage specific goals.

How Do Team Goals Work?

Consider this scenario: Sara is a manager and wants to create a team goal that she can manage but not be responsible for achieving.

This screenshot shows an example of a Team Goal process.

Key Benefits of Team Goals

  • Includes all of the existing features of the Group Goal 2.0 feature (used in Legacy Goal Management) without forcing the goal creator (often a manager) to take accountability for achieving the goal. In other words, the goal will not appear on the creator’s Goal Plan unless the owner decides so.
  • Supports the ability to share assignment distribution over the team goal. This effectively allows a team goal creator to share administrative ownership of that team goal with others who become co-owners.
  • Allows team goal owners and co-owners to assign team goals to users who will be accountable for those goals.
  • Ability to have table fields (for example, Milestones and/or Metric Lookup Table) for a team goal.
  • Support for calculated goal ratings using a Metric Lookup Table.
  • Ability to configure, per field, whether it is editable or read-only in a team goal. This also applies to sub-goal tables.
  • Ability to assign team goals to employees in separate target populations during mass import.
  • Ability to import team goals using Import Performance Goals (TYPE=OBJECTIVE_TEAM).
  • Supports AI-Assisted Performance Goal creation.
  • Supports the Copy function to copy over team goals from other templates.

Limitations of Team Goals

  • No support for dynamic group membership in Team Goals. There is a static list of members when the goal is created and assigned that is not dynamically based on criteria.
  • Cascading goals are not supported in Team Goals. An owner will create a team goal and assign it to their team of direct reports. Still, all changes are controlled by the ownership (unless some fields were made editable by team goal members – this would require back end configuration by an SAP SuccessFactors Consultant).
  • Group rating is not supported in Team Goals. If this is necessary in Team Goals, a Metric Lookup Table can be used as a workaround.

Verify your Goal Plan templates for compatibility with Team Goals

As an administrator, you can use the Check Tool feature to run validation checks for your Goal Plan templates and confirm if they can use Team Goals.

  1. Navigate to Check Tool using Action Search.
  2. Select the Validation tab.
  3. On the Application dropdown list, select Goals.
  4. Select Go to search for the available checks. The results will display three available checks.
  5. Select the following check TGMCheckGroupGoalSetting. Choose Run Check to start.
  6. In the following step, you will select which Goal Plan template you want to review. Select Run when ready.

This screenshot shows the Check Tool Validation tab to run checks on your goal plans with a selected Goal Plan template highlighted.

The results might be either:

  • No issues found: In this case, your Goal Plan template will be able to use Team Goals once all the necessary permissions have been granted to end users.
  • 1 issue found: In this case, you must contact an SAP Consultant or Product Support and file a ticket under the component LOD-SF-PM-GM.

Differences between Goal Import, Team Goals, and Goal Alignment

FunctionDescription
Import Performance GoalsIt allows an administrator to mass-import/update/delete goals and assign them to users with filter fields.
Team GoalsThis function allows an end user, typically a manager, to add a team goal from the Manage Team Goals menu. The option to Assign becomes available after adding a team goal and allows the goal owner to assign the goal to multiple people. By default, only the goal owner can edit fields. However, fields can be permissioned for roles, so a specific role could edit the Percent Complete field, while a different role could edit the Milestones field.
Cascade GoalThis is a form of goal alignment. Cascading allows a user to push goals to other users or pull goals from other users’ goal plans to their own goal plan. Cascading results in the creation of new goals, and each employee can update the status and other details of the goal, depending on their role’s general permissions to view/edit fields set in the back end.
Link GoalThis is another form of goal alignment. Linking allows a user to link their performance goals with another user's goals; it is also possible for users to unalign goals previously linked or cascaded in their own goal plan. Linking creates an alignment relationship and displays it on the Goal Alignment Chart.

Import or Mass Upload Team Goals

Team Goals can be imported using OBJECTIVE_TEAM under the Type header. The following import ACTIONS are supported: ADD, UPDATE, DELETE, ASSIGN, UNASSIGN, SHARE, and UNSHARE. The following figure shows an example of a team goal import file.

This screenshot shows a team goals import file with the type and action columns highlighted.

Summary

  • Team Goals is a feature that allows managers to create, update, and assign goals for their team members without having to include the goals in their own Goal Plan.
  • There are several benefits of Team Goals, including the ability to assign team goals to employees in separate target populations during a mass import, supporting AI-Assisted Performance goal creation, and supporting the ability to share assignment distribution over the team goal.
