Getting started with ABAP Development Tools

Objective

After completing this lesson, you will be able to identify and explain key benefits of using ABAP development tools in enhancing ABAP programming efficiency.

Introduction and Agenda

This e-learning course introduces ABAP Development Tools (ADT) and outlines how they help reduce build and deployment costs by modernizing ABAP development workflows.

ABAP Development Tools for Eclipse is a mature, efficient, and feature-rich development environment designed for all ABAP-based development tasks, especially within the ABAP Cloud development model. By moving away from traditional SAP GUI–based development, ABAP Development Tools enables faster development cycles, improved code quality, and better integration with modern development practices.

This course helps you get started with ABAP Development Tools and guides you in using its capabilities effectively in real-world ABAP projects.

  • Unit 1 introduces the fundamentals of ABAP Development Tools. You will learn how to install and configure ADT, understand its core concepts, and explore the key principles for using the tools efficiently.

  • Unit 2 focuses on advanced features such as quality assurance and debugging. It also highlights major enhancements across different ABAP releases and explains how common tasks traditionally performed in SE80 (Object Navigator) can be executed using ABAP Development Tools.

By the end of this course, you will be able to confidently use ABAP Development Tools to streamline development, improve productivity, and optimize build and deployment efforts.

The following agenda outlines the topics and learning objectives covered in this course

Agenda of the session

The learning objectives for this e-learning course are outlined below:

  • Explain the importance of ABAP Development Tools (ADT) in programming with ABAP.
  • Describe the key functionalities of ABAP Development Tools required for development.
  • Install ABAP Development Tools and perform initial setup to begin development work.
  • Create ABAP projects and development objects, and navigate through features required for development and testing.
  • Identify and compare features available across multiple releases of SAP S/4HANA.

Overview of ABAP Development Tools

The ABAP Development Tools for SAP NetWeaver are SAP's advanced Integrated Development Environment (IDE) for ABAP development, built on the open Eclipse platform. These tools are designed to significantly enhance developer productivity by offering a familiar ABAP environment alongside the efficiency, flexibility, and speed of the Eclipse platform. ABAP Development Tools combine the robust capabilities of SAP's ABAP application server, such as efficient lifecycle management, server-based development, seamless integration, and advanced testing and troubleshooting features, with the modern Eclipse user interface. Additionally, they provide an Eclipse UI client on top of the ABAP platform. The ABAP Development Tools also integrate smoothly with other development environments, like SAP HANA Studio and SAP UI5 SDK, leveraging the open Eclipse ecosystem.

With this video, you will understand:

  • What is ADT (ABAP Development Tools)
  • What is its role in a modern SAP ABAP architecture such as SAP S/4HANA
  • What does it looks like
