Driving Performance Data-Based Health Analyses

Objective

After completing this lesson, you will be able to explain why performance data are important indicators in medical area.

Introduction Tracking Data and Load Management

Data-based health analysis is an important part of modern sports medicine and workload management. It helps medical and coaching teams move beyond subjective impressions and make decisions based on objective data.

For medical staff, this information is especially valuable because it allows them to track physical load, spot early signs of fatigue or overload, and identify injury risks before they become serious. By keeping a clear overview of each player’s workload, they can adjust training, improve recovery, and apply targeted prevention strategies. In the end, this helps reduce injuries, protect player health, and maintain consistent performance.

Comprehensive load management can be carried out in SAP Sports One. The system allows you to synchronize tracking data from your providers for both training sessions and matches. A key focus is the analysis of training load during each session, which supports informed decisions in load planning and injury prevention. If you would like to learn more about creating performance parameters, synchronizing them with provider parameters, and uploading tracking data, please refer to the learning course Exploring SAP Sports One – Training Management.

Once the tracking data has been imported, defined performance parameters such as the Acute:Chronic Workload Ratio (ACWR) can be used to assess player load. ACWR compares a player’s short-term workload, for example, over the last seven days, with their longer-term workload, such as the previous four weeks. This ratio helps identify sudden increases in training intensity, which can significantly raise the risk of injury. SAP Sports One allows staff to monitor ACWR values and determine whether adjustments to individual players’ training loads are necessary.

The value of this analysis increases when using SAP Reference Content. Clubs can compare a player's current training load against defined benchmarks or historical data for specific training types. For instance, you can compare the total distance covered in an MD-1 session with the player's average distance from previous MD-1 sessions. This comparison helps determine if a player is underloaded, optimally loaded, or overloaded. An example of this analysis is shown below.

When applied correctly, analytics transform raw performance data into actionable insights. By combining ACWR monitoring with advanced performance analysis, clubs can optimize training loads, reduce injury risk, and support long-term player health and well-being.

Introduction Medical Test Data

In addition to tracking data, it is equally important for medical staff to regularly collect and review players’ health data from medical tests, as these are essential for a complete medical overview. Blood markers, vitamin levels, and other lab results provide valuable insights into a player’s internal health that cannot be captured through performance data alone.

While performance data shows how the body responds externally, diagnostic data reveals what is happening inside the body. This makes it possible to detect issues such as nutrient deficiencies, inflammation, fatigue, or early signs of sicknesses before they affect performance.

This information can be easily visualized in SAP Sports One by creating and using performance tests that integrate diagnostic data in a clear and structured way. As the creation of performance tests is more closely related to training and athletics, the full process is covered in the SAP learning course Exploring SAP Sports One – Training Management.

By combining both types of data, medical teams gain a complete 360-degree view of each player’s condition. This enables them to adjust nutrition, optimize recovery, and take preventive measures at an early stage. As a result, they can better protect player health, reduce injury risks, and support consistent performance over time.

We recommend exploring how to document medical test data in SAP Sports One so you can effectively use it for analysis.
