An Item Category identifies different types of item (for example, free of charge items and text items) and determines how the system processes the item. Item Category is determined by SSCUI Assign Item Category.

Manual Item Categories can be maintained as an alternative in document processing.
Business Rule Framework plus (BRFplus) provides a comprehensive application programming interface (API) and user interface (UI) for defining and processing business rules. It allows you to model rules in an intuitive way and to reuse these rules in different applications.
For example, you want to set different item categories based on the criteria like sales organization, customer group and order reason.

BRF+ application can be managed via business role business expert with:
- The Application Storage Type as Customizing. Transportation is supported.
- Parameter can be adapted with BRF+ standard table setting.
- BRF+ decision table as default function.
When creating sales documents, maintaining the data those are defined in BRF+ decision table, and inputting the document items, system will automatically assigns the item categories which are defined in decision table if any business rules are hint.
