Creating Objects in SAP BusinessObjects BI Platform 2025

Objective

After completing this lesson, you will be able to create objects and categories in SAP BusinessObjects BI Platform 2025.

Folders in SAP BusinessObjects BI Platform 2025

Definition:
  • Folders organize objects on SAP BusinessObjects BI Platform 2025. Each object must be stored in a public folder (shared global folder) or in personal folder (user's local folder).
  • Because you can set security at the folder level, you can use public folders to control access to information on SAP BusinessObjects BI Platform 2025.
  • As an administrator or a delegated administrator, you can manage object security on public folders and personal folders from the CMC Home page.
  • It is recommended for administrators to focus only object security on public folders (shared folders in SAP BusinessObjects BI Platform 2025).
Public folders organize global user content on SAP BusinessObjects BI Platform 2025.
Personal Folders :
  • Personal folders do not need to be secured by administrators due to the fact that a personal folder is seen locally only by its user (not shared in the SAP BusinessObjects BI Platform 2025).
  • Personal folders can be considered as temporary working folders at the user level, whereas Public folders can be considered as production folders at the company level.
Personal folders organize local user content on SAP BusinessObjects BI Platform 2025.

Usually, the SAP BusinessObjects BI Platform 2025 administrator creates and manages public folders only.

Assigning rights to folders in the SAP BusinessObjects BI Platform 2025 is done in the Folders management area of the Central Management Console.

Manage Content in SAP BusinessObjects BI Platform 2025

In this exercise, you will manage content in SAP BusinessObjects BI Platform 2025.

Categories

Categories give an alternative way of navigating objects by organizing content in SAP BusinessObjects BI Platform 2025.

With content organized into departmental folders, you can use categories to further divide and control access to content by organizational roles.

There are two types of categories:

Two Types of Categories:
  • Global Categories (Corporate):
    • This type of category can be created and viewed by groups and users who have the permissions in BI Launch Pad and in CMC.
    • This type is recommended to be used in a global security model in SAP BusinessObjects BI Platform 2025.
  • Personal Categories:
    • This type of category is created by a user and is only visible to the owner through the BI Launch Pad and administrators through the CMC.
    • This type is not recommended to be used in a global security model in SAP BusinessObjects BI Platform 2025.
While all objects must be contained in folders, category assignment is optional; that's why, it’s important to note the following:
  • You can assign permissions (rights) to a category, but the objects assigned to the category can't inherit category permissions.
  • An object in a category inherits the rights with the folder in which it resides.
  • An object can be in more than one category.

Summary

  • Folders in SAP BusinessObjects BI Platform 2025 are used to organize objects, and each object must be stored in a folder, allowing for security control at the folder level.
  • Typically, the SAP BusinessObjects BI Platform 2025 administrator creates and manages folders, and assigning rights to these folders is done in the Folders management area of the Central Management Console.
  • Categories provide an alternative way to organize and navigate objects and can be used to further divide and control access to content by organizational roles.
  • There are two types of categories—Corporate (viewable by groups and users with permissions) and Personal (created by a user, visible only to the owner and administrators).
  • Permissions can be assigned to categories, but objects in a category do not inherit category permissions; instead, they inherit rights from the folder in which they reside.
