Creating Branching Application Screening Questions

Objective

After completing this lesson, you will be able to configure branching application screening questions in SmartRecruiters.

Branching Application Screening Questions

Branching questions in SmartRecruiters are a type of application screening question that enables the creation of dynamic, personalized, and efficient application forms.

This functionality ensures that candidates are presented only with questions relevant to their specific circumstances or previous answers, minimizing application fatigue and maximizing the quality of the collected data.

Using branching questions, you can reveal additional questions based on the candidate’s answer to a preceding question. Branching logic works by setting up a conditional dependency between questions on the application form.

Questions configuration page, screening question topics with branching example displayed with options for create new question, preview, settings, and remove.

Example Scenario

If a candidate answers Yes to the work authorization question, a follow-up question asking for their visa type might be displayed. If they answer No, the application might skip the visa question entirely and instead present a final declaration.

Note

To use branching questions, the parent question, which triggers the branching question, must be created as a dropdown question type.

Branching Questions Limitations

Branching questions have the following limitations:

  • Branching questions should be set to 1 level.
  • The branching question type must be a dropdown single select to ensure that the candidate’s response will match one of the branch options.

Questions from the Question Library can only be used once across a question set, including questions inside a branch. Therefore, you might need to configure multiple. For example, Extra information - education and Extra information - work experience as branching questions.
