The interview functionality in the Smart Recruiters platform is designed to facilitate "intelligent hiring" by automating administrative tasks, allowing recruiters to focus on high-touch candidate engagement. This system provides a seamless experience for both the hiring team and the candidates through several core capabilities.
In SmartRecruiters, you can run individual interviews, where a single candidate meets with one or more interviewers in a dedicated time slot, and group interviews, where multiple candidates join shared sessions with one or more interviewers for high-volume or recurring hiring needs. Each interview can be configured with a specific interview type (such as phone screen, on-site, video, or other custom labels) so everyone clearly understands the purpose and format of the meeting and communications stay consistent. For added flexibility, recruiters can also use self-scheduling and automated group interviews, which let candidates pick their own time slots from pre-defined interviewer availability and help teams manage large volumes of interviews efficiently. All of these options tie into SmartRecruiters’ broader interviewing and scorecard features, making it easy to schedule, conduct, and evaluate interviews in one place.

Interview Types
Effectively managing and standardizing the interview process is crucial for making informed hiring decisions. SmartRecruiters provides tools to configure interview types and scorecards, ensuring consistency and focus during candidate evaluations. Interview types help categorize different interview formats, such as phone screens, in-person interviews, or panel interviews. For example, when a member of the hiring team schedules an interview, they can assign each time slot an Interview Type, a configurable label that describes the purpose and/or format of an interview time slot (for example, Phone Screen, Technical Interview, On-site).
Creating interview types ensures your team can easily select the appropriate type, streamlining scheduling and providing clarity for both interviewers and candidates.
Benefits of Using Interview Types
Clarity and context for everyone: Selecting an interview type assigns a clear, standardized label to the slot, so interviewers (and your team) immediately understand the intent of that segment.

- Cleaner, more personalized communications: An interview type token [m_interview_type] is available as a merge field in email templates under the Add merge field menu, allowing interview invitations and reminders to automatically display the interview type without manual updates.

- Consistent candidate experience in self-scheduling: Sending Self-Scheduling invites and aligning Interview Type with the selected Format/Location helps avoid confusing calendar subjects for candidates (such as Phone vs. On-site).
