Leveraging Real-Time Insights with Event-Driven Architectures

Modernizing Integration with SAP Integration Suite

My name is Karsten Strothmann. I'm the lead product manager for event-driven integration at SAP. And well, surprise surprise, I would like to talk about event-driven integration, event-driven architectures now. And I would like to start with a smalling building block. An event. What is an event? An event is a significant change in state. What does that mean? If we look at the pictures on top, there's a leak  in a water pipe. You want to be informed of that change immediately. There's somebody walking into the surveillance camps. You want to be informed of this activity immediately. And there's a product change in your S4 system. You want to be informed in real time about the significant change. And that's actually one of the major advantages of event-driven and architectures already, real time. You get informed of changes immediately in microseconds, milliseconds, around the globe, if you want that. Then, and if you look at the event, it's in cloud events format. It's a joint format by a number of major vendors. It is cross-vendor. So events can really be exposed from the SAP side and consumed on a lot of other platforms and vice versa. SAP can consume events from Azure, for example, from AWS, Google, and so on. So it's breaking down silos really. Then it's decoupling, meaning there's buffering in there, it's asynchronous, and it allows you to develop architectures that really scale. On top of that we're following a Pub-Sub approach. So, I always say it's social media style approaches brought into the enterprise world. If you want to look at event-driven use cases, well it has already gotten very mature. If you step back you see the EDA. That's the color coding here. I was just playing around with things there. Nevertheless, these are 55 very different use cases. There are use cases close to the SAP ecosystem, data distribution between backend systems, there are use cases that go way beyond the SAP ecosystem like smart trash cans for example or monitoring vineyards and so on. So very, very different use cases that are important for you. It's already mature. It's a new technology. At the same point in time, it's very mature and there are a lot of live customers already. Let's look at event-driven integration with SAP Integration Suite and the components and let's start on the left hand side. There, we do have the event sources. This is where the events originate from. You can see all major SAP backend there. S4HANA exposes standard events, S4Cloud exposes standard events, and we're talking about 600 plus events here that you can adjust. ERP ECC, you can expose events using an add-on, there you're building custom events, events specific to your use case, success factors where you're reusing the intelligent services events. Then, there are two event brokers, event brokers distribute the events, they offer additional features as well. There is Event Mesh and Integration Suite which got introduced in June. It's an event broker as a service, very small hurdle to get started. It's included in the standard edition and in the premium edition of Integration Suite. And well, it's perfect for businesses to start their EDA journey. Then, there is a full-fledged broker, the market leading SAP Integration Suite Advanced Event Mesh. It's an optional component to Integration Suite. It's even a distributed mesh of brokers. You can combine any number of brokers, 10, 50, 100 brokers to build a network around the globe, and it absolutely scales. It has on top advanced features and yeah, as said, extreme scale and it's completely mature, market-leading, best of breed and fully integrated into the SAP technical ecosystem. Now let's look at a few updates, things that have happened since our last course. What has been going on? Well, first of all, event mesh is now a fully integrated capability of SAP Integration Suite. On top of that, Advanced Event Mesh, there, we have provided a new bundling. So there is this almost all-inclusive bundle. We have bundled distributed tracing and deployment regions are in, features like partition queues that allow you to consume events in order. We've put them into a package to facilitate things. And then there has been a major step forward in respect to S4HANA and S4HANA Cloud as an event source. There's a direct connectivity now to both Event Mesh and Integration Suite and to Advanced Event Mesh, and there are lots of new features like source site filtering, like derived events that allow you to inject your own payload basically to standard events, there's local event consumption, and so on. With that said,  let me show you what event-driven architecture is about with a quick demo. Now, this is our S4HANA Cloud system. What you see here, are the outbound topics, and we are exposing business partner events via the outbound topics. Important point, if you want to expose events from an S4, you need to add them. So the events are not exposed by standard. You really need to add them to the channel. And as said, there are hundreds of events there. In our case, we will send out business partner changed and business partner created events here from the S4 side. This is a look at advanced event mesh. You can see that it's very powerful. There are parts here: event management, event streaming, where you're really handling, creating, operating your brokers and your event network, your mesh. And there's a very powerful inside part. This is advanced event mesh on a broker level. So what you do see here is the messages that have been added to a queue. If we look it up, you can see that we've been subscribing to an S4 system here and I would like to go to the Messages Queued part here, because in the next step what we're going to do, is we will update our business partner here, our demo business partner and I will just update the search term. That should be fully sufficient. Now it's saving. And if we're switching over to the queue again, you should be able to see the event if I do a refresh immediately. So, we have done an update to a business partner in an S4 system and you can see how quickly the event shows up in your advanced event mesh queue and you can now listen as an event consumer to this queue you can consume the event from the queue and so on. So it is about real time it is about distribution of those events and it's extremely straightforward, very powerful and easy. Good. Now that we've seen the demo, let me quickly summarize what event-driven integrations are about and how Integration Suite facilitates your event-driven architectures and integrations. Event Mesh is now a fully integrated capability of SAP Integration Suite. It's a starting point for your EDA journey. Very low hurdle, easy to get started and you get it with your standard and premium editions. Then you can continue your EDA journey with the market leading advanced event mesh that is now available in a bundle and allows you to address all your event-driven architecture needs and to implement your EDAs. And as said, a lot of customers have been moving forward, follow them. Thank you very much.
