Grouping Data

Objective

After completing this lesson, you will be able to create and manage custom data groups to simplify analysis and improve report organization in a Web Intelligence document.

Manage Groups

You can use Manage Groups to create a new variable by grouping the values of an existing dimension. Instead of writing a complex formula (such as If...Then...Else), you use a visual interface to group values into boxes that you name.

This method provides a quick, no-code way to create custom business groupings in a report.

Quarterly sales revenue tables on the left are consolidated into half-year sales revenue tables on the right, with totals bolded for each year.

Add Manage Groups

To manage groups, you use the Main panel.

The Manage Groups dialog groups Q1 and Q2 as First Half and Q3 and Q4 as Last Half under the name Half Year.

  • Combine data values to form new, more meaningful dimensions for reporting.
  • Access and manage your data groups easily from the Main panel.

Group Data

Business Example

Your manager asks you to create a sales report that displays the quantity of items sold and their unit prices, broken down by year, quarter, and SKU description. This report needs to be organized further by half-year increments to provide a clearer overview of sales performance.
